The hotel

A luxury hotel in the heart of the city combining modern features with contemporary on-of-a-kind design, the Proper Hotel Santa Monica is a proper treat. The rooftop pool is the only one you’ll find in the area, so nab a sunbed or treat yourself to an alcove for the day for that added relaxation – no need to move, just have your drinks and food delivered to you, they’ll even supply the suncream, you’ll need it on those summer days. The hotel may not be situated on the coastal front, but it positions you in great proximity to bars and restaurants, and the local farmers market which is a must visit. You’ll feel more of a local in this hangout, a step away from the obvious tourist spots. When you do want to visit the beach (who wouldn’t?!), it’s only a short stroll away, or hop on an eLECTRA bike to get you there even quicker. Of course, Santa Monica has plenty of trendy restaurants to visit, but the hotel have got some fantastic offerings of their own, chill out in Palma when you need a break from the hot weather or a late night apertif. Or if you want to soak up those rays with a chilled drink in hand then Calabra offers fantastic poolside views, with a sushi menu available Thursday – Sunday for those sashimi lovers.

Calabra Rooftop (serving fresh Mediterranean and Californian cuisine, open for brunch, light bites, dinner, and drinks, with an additional Sushi menu available Thurs-Sun). Palma (Lobby lounge serving a casual food menu, and a wide selection of drinks throughout the day).

My son and I used many services of the Proper including the pool, both restaurants, room service and the concierge. The two restaurants have outstanding menus and quality of dining, and are very different. The rooftop restaurant beside the pool is vibrant, while the one off the main lobby is comfortable and relaxing. Beyond the excellent facilities and service, of special note is the staff. All the employees, in every position, are exceptionally friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Kudos to them all! Read less

From the moment we arrived at the Santa Monica Proper we were greeted with outstanding customer service and beautiful decor. Located close to the beach, it is within walking distance to all Santa Monica has to offer. It was a lovely experience and we will definitely return.

From coffee downstairs in the morning to an afternoon by the pool, or late night in-room dining, you never need to question whether or not you'll have top notch service. When we checked in we were told we had been upgraded though upon entertaining our room, it was the same room we had booked. Though a feather-free room was requested due to allergies, the room had feather pillows and a feather duvet. The room was not clean. When we checked in we were told we had been upgraded though upon entertaining our room, it was the same room we had booked. Though a feather-free room was requested due to allergies, the room had feather pillows and a feather duvet. The room was not clean. There were a few long black hairs on the floors, there was another long black hair in one of the bathroom towels, they were on the sofa, and there were more than a few in the top blanket on the bed. There was an acrylic nail along with dust bunnies and other debris under the bathroom sinks. The thermostats wouldn’t go below 68. The fan was unable to be turned on. A significant portion of the wallpaper was peeling. A lampshade was cracked. The bathroom and bedroom could use more hooks. The bathroom could use an extra outlet or two The outlets underneath the bedside tables were awkward to access and certainly not easily accessible by a person with restrained movements. Street noise is so loud. We realize this is a renovated historic portion of the building, but appropriated soundproof windows should have been installed instead of what had been. There were no flowers or plants in the room as all images show. When we ate dinner downstairs and ordered two apps and two entrees, all four dishes were served at once. Read less

We also enjoyed the rooftop bar, Calabra, once again great service.
