Monterey Tides, a Joie de Vivre Hotel

Our stay was wonderful! We were upgraded due to construction which was amazing! Our room was beautiful. The hotel is beautiful with a location that can’t be beat! Staff was wonderful! Safe and quiet. Cons: Resort fees when we didn’t use any amenities. Very expensive parking on top of pricey rooms. No coffee maker in room. No microwave. But overall just beautiful!! I would definitely recommend. Hopefully all of the rooms are as beautiful as the one we had. Read less

No notice whatsoever that this ENTIRE hotel is under construction. Got woken up at 5am to construction crews. There are no amenities available, nothing available for use. There is no access to the beach. There is no coffee or tea in the room, no microwave, no cups. I got walked in on while in my underwear and told they were doing an "inspection". Fire alarms have been going off throughout the day. This facility is not fit to get open!!!!! Read less

Very mixed reviews from my recent stay. I have come here 3-4 times before because the location can't be beat. Our favorite room option is the lower level with an ocean view. We love those rooms because there's a deck right when you walk out of your room with a view of the ocean, and it's steps away from beach access. Upon booking, we saw that the rooms were renovated, so we were excited to see the upgrades they've made. In the past, the rooms were nothing to write home about - extremely basic, more like motel rooms, but easy to overlook given everything I mentioned above. When we pulled up, the first thing that stood out was the brand new exterior paint job. Huge upgrade! Previously the whole property was an old, tired tan color: now it is mostly a dark navy blue with light grey accents. Another thing that stood out, though, was that there was a lot of construction being done.. A bunch of work trucks outside and we saw some areas boarded off. Didn't think too much of it initially, but that soon changed. Once we got through the lobby and took the elevator down to where the rooms are, we started to realize that the grounds were completely under construction. Before we even got to our room, we were pretty devastated to see the decks were all taped off. There were construction fences up everywhere, including one with a tarp over it directly in front of our room, completely blocking the "ocean view" (see pic). Honestly felt like our trip was completely ruined within seconds of getting to our room. We were both extremely down - we paid for an ocean view and got a view of a construction site. It was a huge damper, so we ended up deciding we needed to say something. The manager was understanding of our disappointment and we got moved to the second floor. It definitely worked better compared to what we had, but still a let down considering what we thought we were getting. I get that they are doing what they have to do to stay open during a renovation and that it doesn't happen over night. But it was pretty disappointing to not have any advanced notice of the current state of the property. We made the best of it, but honestly there is 0 chance we would have come here if we knew the deck wasn't open and there was so much construction. (I assume that is exactly why they don't make any mention of it beforehand). The first couple hours of our trip started with dealing with the let down, moving to a new room, and figuring out how to still make it work. It really changed the dynamics of our plans. With all of that said, I do have to still give it 3 stars for a few reasons. The 2 rooms we saw were fully renovated, and they were absolutely beautiful. The upgrades they've made are night and day. The rooms are 10/10 now. Can't stress enough how nice they are, especially compared to what they were before. Once the construction is done, this will be a 5 star hotel in my books. We'll definitely be back, but only if we confirm the construction is complete beforehand. But for this stay on the weekend of Mother's Day 2024, it was definitely not worth the price of admission. Reception upon arrival was really rude. The hotel was under construction. Most of the place is shut down with massive curtains around most of the corridors. Most of the amenities are closed off including the pool. No one guided us through the hotel to get to our hotel through the maze of construction. Until I went back and demanded some guidance to get to our room with multiple bags and a baby on arm. Won't be back to this hotel and won't recommend it to anyone, especially with young kids.
