The hotel

‘The Del’ as the Coronado is known as has been open for business since 1888 and is a designated National Historic Landmark! Indeed, it’s been the backdrop to many a Hollywood movie, including Some Like it Hot starring Marilyn Monroe. The last of California’s stately old seaside hotels, it is a monument to Victorian grandeur with virtually no two rooms alike and a sumptuous wood panelled lobby that has to be seen to be believed. Recent additions include Shore House at The Del, an elevated hotel experience in an extraordinary neighborhood of seaside villas. From an oceanfront pool that blends seamlessly into the horizon, to an inviting living room that flows effortlessly outdoors, Shore House offers an extraordinary sense of place, where family and friends form deep connections in a rare beachside setting. The Del's newest restaurant inside the beautifully restored Laundry building. Dine outside on the lawn and watch the action at the BBQ Pit or gather inside the historic brick building beneath vaulted ceilings and the Laundry's original conveyor system. Pull up a stool at the historic wooden bar from the 1880s for inventive cocktails, beer and wine.

Our resent stay at the Del was disappointing to say the least. When we booked the staycation in March for Mother's Day weekend, we booked two queens, ocean view in the View. At check in we were routed to a resort view in the Cabana. Our view was the utility tent for the pool towels with bin in and out all day. Also we were across from the elevator, so at times quite the gathering. We got several emails prior highlighting "Fun in the Sun" with food/drinks/relaxing on the sun deck ...it was closed for renovations. We got one promoting the buffet with a picture of the grand ballroom. Turned out to be in the South Point Ballroom and at $185 appears to be a bit of price gouging. The historical tour was lame and not worth $40. We did enjoy serval meals and especially at the Laundry and Serea. Food was great and service made it all the more enjoyable. Housekeeping was another stand out and Angelica was especially helpful several times. With more than half of the Del closed for renovations, a clear heads up would have been nice. Read less

I checked in at 2pm and the receptionist said she would give me an expedited check in. Then I waited until 3:30 so it was not expedited at all. I asked but got the runaround. The worst was when the shower water did not drain. I called for help and it turned out to be a plug of hair and goop that wasn’t cleaned out of the drain. Yuck, I was… Read more

The worst was when the shower water did not drain. I called for help and it turned out to be a plug of hair and goop that wasn’t cleaned out of the drain. Yuck, I was nauseated for the rest of the night. The light on my porch could not be turned off during the night and I would hear a buzzing noice periodically during the day. All of this for the “group negotiated rate” of $500 a night. Not worth the value,I have stayed at better hotels for much less!!! Read less

We knew it was going to be expensive and we knew about the construction. So even putting those 2 things aside....we were underwhelmed with the service. First of all, they do not offer room service! What? $1,000 per night hotel and you can't have food or water brought to your room? Very bad experience. At the pool bar/restaurant - we were server… Read more

At the pool bar/restaurant - we were server chicken that was definitely bad - smelled and tasted bad. They comped the meal and apologized, but I would expect much better from the Del. The service was OK - but not 5 star. Read less

Family trip, stayed at the Shore House and loved it. The staff were exceptionally helpful, rooms spotlessly clean. We had housekeeping every day and they did a full clean. We only went for a day visit; did not overnight. My daughter's first time to visit the Del. She loved the Victorian style, when you walk into the lobby you feel like its something out of Titanic. The main hotel is super cool as was the open hallways (the main building is under construction). What was open was cool including the main souvenir shop. When you go downstairs the new modern shops seem like out of Coney Island (somewhat odd and touristy). Went outside to the back facing the ocean and it was nice. It was cloudy and cold so we didn't venture on the sand but I imagine it would be really cool on a nice, hot summer day. Beach is expansive and inviting. We returned to the lobby and sat on the rocking chairs outside to check out prices for a room. Expedia had it for over $1000 a room at various parts of the year. Since the rooms look way more modern (it's Hilton branded) I'm not so sure if they were worth it for that price (for us) There wasn't a whole lot of customer service greeting us either at reception or the lobby so had I paid $1000 for Easter weekend, I might be pissed. I would like to see the hotel completely finished from construction to see if there is a price change (cheaper?) otherwise it would just be another day trip to visit the Del. My daughter did like the Victorian style though. Read less
