Riu Plaza Fishermans Wharf

Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco

The hotel

Just a pleasant stroll from the shops and entertainment at Pier 39, and the ferry to Alcatraz, the Riu Plaza Fisherman’s Wharf makes a stellar base to explore from. The hotel’s relaxed and friendly vibe is ideal after a day’s dim sum dining, cable car riding and selfie snapping. Your room is suitably airy and comfortable, you can kick back on the sun terrace by the outdoor heated pool, and, perhaps our favourite part, you can hangout by a crackling fire pit in the outdoor living area.

Location is great - convenient to several tourist sites. convenient for transport. Breakfast was good and plentiful, especially compared to most other US hotels we've stayed at. And we were upgraded to one of the few rooms with a balcony. Nice to have fresh air.

We stayed at this hotel from Fri 3rd May to Tues 7th May and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. On arrival, check-in took about 5 minutes and we were given free bottles of water. Our room was spacious, clean and whilst the view wasn't brilliant, nevertheless the room ticked all our boxes. One cautionary note and that is we had to pull the blind down regularly as you could see into the rooms opposite, so must assume likewise from over that side. The bar area was nice, although you did have to gamble on getting a nice, cushioned seat in the lounge, that depended on timing. The staff were generally nice and attentive. Breakfast could be a bit of a free for all but was managed quite well. Whilst we didn't have to and was our choice, we went down for breakfast at 06.45 am every day and were seated promptly. There was lots on offer, although not much variety in the fried breakfast area i.e. thin strips of bacon, small sausage, scrambled egg and the occasional hash brown - be prompt as it goes cold quickly! We noticed other people who had left it later for breakfast had to queue and even be seated in the adjacent lounge. One word of caution and this concerned our last day. Having decided upon the cheaper transport option by taking the BART back to the airport, we required a taxi from the hotel to the Bart Station about a mile away. The bellboy (or whatever the title) by the dais next to the main door encouraged us to have a taxi to the airport for $60 one way. However we stuck with our original plan because of traffic and a likely delay resulting in a higher charge, and was allocated a taxi with an Asian driver immediately. On arrival at the BART Station he asked for $20 'with a tip.' This was much more expensive than the taxi we hailed on arrival by the Hyatt i.e. we were charged $15.00, so be careful! Other than that, we found this hotel to be a great choice, was just around the block from the main Fisherman's Wharf attractions, barely taking 2-3 minutes to locate. Would recommend to anyone looking for hotels in the SF area and would award it 9/10. Read less

My room and stay at the Riu in San Francisco was wonderful. Breakfast was included, and it offered a wide and delicious variety and was very efficiently run. The hotel was spacious, clean, and beautiful, and very conveniently located for our sightseeing trip.
