The Marker Hotel - Union Square

Union Square, San Francisco

Virgin rating

The hotel

Put yourself slap-bang in the middle of some of San Francisco’s most fashionable theatres, restaurants, and sights. The boutique Marker Hotel is a great base — and its energy matches its setting. It was built in 1910 but you can still see its ‘Beaux Arts’ beauty in the lobby’s floor-to-ceiling fireplace and grand marble staircase. The hotel’s anything but olde-worlde though, with little touches like WiFi, and a Hydration Station providing fruit and herb infused water on tap.

We stayed here as the first hotel in our delayed trip from 2020 which was to celebrate my husbands 60th birthday. We told our booking agent we were celebrating a birthday whilst we were actually at this hotel who entered a note on our booking ‘clients celebrating a birthday’. The Marker did not even acknowledge this. No champagne, nothing. Didn’t even get mentioned when we checked in. So disappointed as we have had chocolates and cards when celebrating a wedding anniversary at other hotels. Fortunately I had made arrangements for a special night out, but it would have been topped it off to come back to a glass of champers. The hotel itself was ok. Clean and quirky. We didn’t like the area it was in. Don’t turn left into the Tenderloin district. We got lost and ended up there, it doesn’t feel safe. It’s convenient for the street cars, get a pass and you can jump on and off as many times a day as you like. Read less

Hotel in great location, rooms are spacious and comfy beds. Staff very helpful and willing to give recommendations and ideas. Restaurant staff were helpful after arriving late they accommodated us in the restaurant with snacks rather than a full meal.

Generally very well and organized, easy to check in even though I had not made the reservation, they were able to help me quickly. They do not allow food delivery to the room as I am used to, but they have a place in the lobby to receive it
