The hotel

A member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, Shutters on the Beach is an award-winning establishment with a distinctly discerning clientele. Similar in style to a 1920s or 1930s beach resort, it is light, airy and luxurious with many works of art on show, including pictures by David Hockney and Robert Motherwell. Rooms and suites boast all the comforts of home and are very generous in size with great views of the ocean. Amenities include the gorgeous ONE Spa offering a wide range of signature treatments, including the Signature Facial with Augustinus Bader. There’s also a swimming pool to laze by and a well-equipped fitness centre with sauna and steam rooms. One Pico is the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, showcasing a seasonally changing menu of modern American cuisine. If a more laid-back atmosphere appeals, however, beach-side cafe Coast more than fits the bill and is open from morning until night. For afternoon tea and evening cocktails, look no further than the lobby lounge, a cosy, intimate space that is popular with locals and guests alike.

We visited for one night to celebrate my milestone birthday. From the moment we arrived, the valet and the friendly woman at the check-in counter made us feel welcome. Our room was not only clean but also filled with delightful beach-themed details. To our surprise, there was a delicious chocolate birthday cake waiting for us in the room. We dined at Coast for both breakfast and dinner, where our server Jesse was engaging and offered fantastic suggestions for our meals. Order the carrot cake! We enjoyed the pool and hot tub, which were quite pleasant. On our way to the pool that evening, Lisa from housekeeping noticed that one of us was missing a robe and kindly provided us with another. Her thoughtfulness was much appreciated. During the day, we took advantage of the complimentary beach cruisers and relaxed on the sand in the hotel-provided beach chairs—such a wonderful perk for a seaside hotel. We also loved sitting in the lobby by the fireplace while listening to live music in the evenings. The overall "small beach town" vibe of this hotel was truly enjoyable, with its various seating areas and charming beach decor throughout. I can't wait to come back! Read less

We went to 1Pico for a romantic meal. Had dinner at the bar with Art who was friendly and helpful. Mary helped with our wine picks, we had some small Cali producers. The food was incredible. I had the scallops and the filet was great too! I would definitely go back soon!

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights in mid October. Pro's: central location adorably decorated rooms with cute little touches charming lobby where many guests enjoy congregating. Con's: small rooms most ocean view rooms require you to look over the driveway and A/C units on top of the building the hotel seems to do a lot of private events which is bad news for guests trying to enjoy the pool. Regarding the private events, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of our stay, the hotel staff closed down the lounge area adjacent to the pool where most of the chaise were set up at 3-3:30pm each day. That was followed by at least 1 1/2 hours of clattering and banging as they wheeled away all the lounge chairs and umbrellas and wheeled in all the tables, chairs, glassware, etc. for that night's event. Prior to the start of the event, they bring in a giant privacy screen which completely blocks everyone's view. Since many rooms overlook the pool area, you have to listen to the racket until the event concludes. No apologies. No acknowledgment. Nothing. Each day the guests around the pool would burst out laughing at the lack of regard for the guests. We finally complained to the manager after the third day. After much negotiating, they comp'ed us 1 night. I'd rather have known about the limited use of the pool area and event noise and stayed somewhere else. Read less

We’ve been coming to shutters for years and it’s been great. Last year there was lots of repair works near our room starting very early and lasting for days. We put that down to a one off as we love the location and the view from the pool terrace. This year it’s awful. Our room is very noisy and we can hear things in the next room as well as the laundry. And the terrace is shut off on Thursday, Friday and Saturday for private events. Which means there is a shortage of room to lay out and enjoy the weather, if you find a place you’ll be disturbed as the events set up, and you won’t get to see the spectacular view of the ocean. One of great things about shutters is that it always feels quiet and you always feel like you’re important management. Now it just feels like they want to squeeze as much money out of their place as they can and to hang with the experience. So, why pay the premium price to stay here if it’s just like other hotels?
