The hotel

A member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, Shutters on the Beach is an award-winning establishment with a distinctly discerning clientele. Similar in style to a 1920s or 1930s beach resort, it is light, airy and luxurious with many works of art on show, including pictures by David Hockney and Robert Motherwell. Rooms and suites boast all the comforts of home and are very generous in size with great views of the ocean. Our stay in the hotel was from June 28th to July 6th, 2024. Room 437. Everything was ok until we discovered that $ 2,000 had disappeared from our safe. The hotel did not cooperate in refunding the damage. Sad 😔 😞 very unpleasant experience 😢

Shutters is a beautiful, Cape Cod-style establishment in an incredible location on the beach and close to the Santa Monica Pier. The staff were excellent from arrival to departure and the food and beverages were superb, especially the Tropical Cake! We had 3 fantastic days by the pool awaiting our flight home after having stayed in Beverly Hills and Honolulu just before. I’d highly recommend Shutters to anyone but would just offer a word of caution, especially for foreign visitors: don’t go walking around the streets of Santa Monica. We were abused and threatened with violence by a person on drugs TWICE while walking to the local shopping mall. Needless to say, we hot-footed it back to the hotel and remained there for the duration. Stick to the hotel and the beachfront, don’t go wandering around the area. California’s issues are all too apparent. Read less

Amazing location, comfortable rooms, incredibly friendly staff, beautiful public spaces. Really enjoyed the pool area and being right across from the beach. Truly feels like an oasis of calm despite being in Los Angeles!! It’s a first class hotel and experience!!

For the restaurant: The food was so mediocre; could have had better fish and chips from a street stall. The pudding was also like a powder and milk mix. One waiter was so miserable, just slapped the food down. Very disappointed! I think they trade on the name but not what I expected!

Shutters is the place that our whole 3-generation family wants to go to every summer. We all love walking on the beach, spending time at the pool and walking into town for shopping. Enough to do but still relaxing The staff is attentive, without being oppressive, and they are great around the little ones. The food from all the restaurants (including the related Casa del Mar next door) is excellent, as is their room and pool services. Shutters is relatively expensive but we always feel that we get good value for our expenditures. The proof is that everyone keeps looking forward coming back year after year. Read less
