‘The Del’ as the Coronado is known as has been open for business since 1888 and is a designated National Historic Landmark! Indeed, it’s been the backdrop to many a Hollywood movie, including Some Like it Hot starring Marilyn Monroe. The last of California’s stately old seaside hotels, it is a monument to Victorian grandeur with virtually no two rooms alike and a sumptuous wood panelled lobby that has to be seen to be believed. Recent additions include Shore House at The Del, an elevated hotel experience in an extraordinary neighborhood of seaside villas. From an oceanfront pool that blends seamlessly into the horizon, to an inviting living room that flows effortlessly outdoors, Shore House offers an extraordinary sense of place, where family and friends form deep connections in a rare beachside setting. The Del's newest restaurant inside the beautifully restored Laundry building. Dine outside on the lawn and watch the action at the BBQ Pit or gather inside the historic brick building beneath vaulted ceilings and the Laundry's original conveyor system. Pull up a stool at the historic wooden bar from the 1880s for inventive cocktails, beer and wine.

Image of the Tripadvisor rating Worth a quick visit - busy

We came here for lunch to see the hotel famous for Marilyn Monroe films. The hotel was very busy indeed as there is a mix of residents and many tourists just visiting the site. We valet parked but note that the restaurants do not normally validate for valet parking only self-parking. The shops are very nice so worth a quick visit.

OK… So you’ve read all the other reviews. Just like we did. And when you’re done reading, you’re asking yourself “am I crazy to pay these rates and stay at this broken down tired filthy hotel?“ Well, here’s the true story. And when you’re done reading, you’re asking yourself “am I crazy to pay these rates and stay at this broken down tired filthy hotel?“ Well, here’s the true story. I’ll allow for the fact that some people were probably staying here during the hotel’s renovation efforts. So I can’t comment on their experiences. But I have to say I found this place to be perfect. I had long wanted to visit here and it fulfilled every expectation. I don’t know what this place was like last month or last year; but I can tell you as of May, 2025, it is in immaculate condition, well-staffed, well cared for and well-run. The valet, front desk staff, food and beverage and room service staff were all great. Very friendly and courteous. The room in the Victorian building was perfect. First, the beds were comfortable. Plenty of pillows… Towels, etc. There was a mini-refrigerator (which I always appreciate.). The decor was understated but appropriate for a beach luxury resort. Bathroom had an exhaust fan. The only negative is we could have used a little more clothing storage (more closet and drawer space). The hallways are wide. You have access to your own ice (I don’t like to have to call for ice every time I want some). Coffee maker in the room. Don’t have much more to add. It was simply GREAT. Read less

Lovely preserved antique halls and reception, amazing decoration, beach village beside the victorian beautifuly built, but please stop adding gift shops and more shops and bars in front of the victorian building. It s hard to have the old views of the hotel from the sides and from the beach due to all new constructions. And the place is a jewel, ghost and all. The beach is very big and the sea is usually cold. Marianne from the victorian reception and Tito from Varanda were especially warm and welcoming. The hotel lacks in room dining services and the delivery of packages might be slow. Our deluxe bedroom at the victorian building didn't t have the small make up mirror. All rooms also lack good blackouts, light enters from the sides of all curtains . Do not expect a personalized service as this has become a huge hotel ( I wasn't t there in high season but it starting to have a resort feeling I did not like ) I spent three nights at the beach village and one at the victorian building, my conclusion is as regards value, it s better to be at the beach village: the rooms are bigger, with bathtubs, better views and more space. You can still enjoy the victorian village huge halls, and beautiful veranda with the typical rocking chairs and vitreous windows .Loved to see old pictures too. The only reason I would stay again in the victorian building is if they would use again the amazing antique breakfast room with circled windows for the main intention it was first built: for people to have breakfast at the victorian building .They now rent the space for events and you can only see these huge rooms from the entrance and outside.Wherever you sleep breakfast would be in one of the newly built restaurants ( even if it s called veranda it was not part of the original construction and has a modern style and feeling ) Even though i am thank fui to see the front , the main entrance, reception and halls of the hotel so well preserved, It s a pity the owners don t entirely decide to give this hotel back all its original glamour and prefer size and profit to quality and romance. Hotel itself is beautiful and a historic resort to visit. My family and I are what I consider easy guests and never leave bad reviews and are easily impressed, but not this time. Where the Del completely misses the mark is its lackluster service. My Family and I stayed last week and I have never stayed at a hotel that makes you feel less valued as a guest. For what you are paying you would expect some sort of service standard but the Del underwhelmed. From a restaurant not bringing a member of my party their food and then not doing anything to make up for it other than saying” wow sorry you must be starving” to asking the front desk for a screwdriver or help in opening a toy we purchased their to insert batteries and being told no and it’s against policy just a bad showing for any star rated hotel. At the pool the waitress and waiters seem like they do not care at all and do not check in and take drink orders and never bring your drinks over, just continually missing the mark. Not to mention as a Hilton Honors member and hotel guest getting not even a discount on the beach chair rentals is laughable for what you pay. Went to take advantage of the beach side s’mores they advertise w my kids and being told it’s $258 for roasted marshmallows. I can only imagine the hotel itself needs a culture transformation as it’s is evident then genuinely do not care to impress as people visit no matter what. If they can get the service and valued piece down, this would be a must visit. Read less
