I joined my friend in Barbados to celebrate her 50th birthday at Turtle Beach by Elegant Hotels. She had a bad experience with booking the room, but we were hopeful that that experience was behind us. Upon checking in, we realised that it was not. The room was not as promised and the reaction of the desk attendant indicated that little was going to be done to rectify the situation. Finally we agreed to let them place a twin bed in the room ( the room was supposed to contain 2 queens , instead it contained 1 king and a twin pull out recliner/chair). That was the first of many disappointments. While accompanying us to the room, the porter Andrew, proceeded to berate my friend and essentially told her it was her fault the room was not to her liking because she should have emailed. I am still unsure how he got himself involved in this. Apparently the porters are part-owners. As to the room. Well, let’s just say it’s way past its glory days. It is in dire need of several upgrades. There are no electrical outlets in the bathroom and water leaked continuously from the ceiling. I was looking for my shoes under the bed and raided up the bed skirt to see better. I was in shock at the condition of the foundation . Torn and ragged! I refused to look at the mattress to avoid nightmares since we still had to spend 3 more nights! I pulled out my travel bed sanitiser and got to work! The food was a disappointment. I have never seen such horrible, soggy scrambled eggs in my life and hopefully, I never will again. Additionally at the restaurants, the birds are a nightmare. They are EVERYWHERE and get into everything. They also poop any and everywhere. I’m unsure how long this has been going on but I am certain it should stop. On our 4th night there were heavy winds and rains. So much so that our room became flooded, with the doors closed. We fled the room and were on our way to report it when we met 2 hotel workers who promised to come in and suction up the water. We still reported the flooding to the front desk. Fast forward to 2 hours later, we returned to the room. Still flooded. Went back to reception, she indicated they would address it in the morning and gave us 2 dirty/used beach towels to put on the floor. The next day, no one showed except for housekeeping. She was shocked that no one had come by previously. She even called about the leaking ceiling and told us that someone would be by to take care of it.NO ONE SHOWED UP. Not once. I checked out the next day, before my friend who was supposed to have a late check out (2pm). Imagine her surprise when 3 separate people showed up to find out when she would be leaving since they were not informed of any late check out! Fed-up, she checked out at midday even though her flight off the island was not until 7pm. A total nightmare. Marriott. Please. Close this hotel. Upgrade the facilities and re-train the staff. I read the reviews before booking and they seem to be polarised between awful and good. But when I saw a recent review saying this was a travellers 5th visit - that was the clincher for me. In fairness the bad and good reviews have merit but overall the good is not enough to outweigh the poor. The hotel must have either been poorly managed or just not invested in over the years. Marriott have bought out all the Barbados Elegant resort hotels which apart from this one have all been closed for renovations. This one will close in 2025 for 12-18 months to be renovated. I met a Marriott Platinum member who said the place was awful and the food sub standard. Not an unreasonable view. Staff - so many seem like they don’t want to be here and it reflects in their un engaging demeanour. Not impolite but clearly uninterested. Hospitality is hard work but you have to try to seem happy. There are a few exceptions- notably Maradona who is the beach and pool waiter. He is so upbeat all the time it makes the rest of the staff seem even more dour. The handymen did respond quickly - within 15 mins to fix the broken runner on the rusted patio doors; reboot the tv and internet in the room ( the tangle of cables is interesting!) and sort the hot water. However on the day we were going out for the day, I locked myself out of the safe and it was 50 minutes before anyone came - after 2 calls it was only an in-person visit to reception that forced the issue. Thats unacceptable Rooms- the bedroom is big and clean and the bed is comfortable but the decor and furnishing are tired. However anything metal is rusted and unmaintained. The bath doesn’t drain and the enamel Paint is flaking. The glass shower runner is horrid and you need to draw the plastic shower curtain across to stop the floor flooding. Bedroom cleaning is up to scratch. A lot can be forgiven if the food is top notch which sadly it wasn’t. The breakfasts are not too bad and the bacon is lovely and crispy. But proffering tinned fruit is never acceptable- the fresh should not run out. all the dining chairs are stained with bird poo - every one. You cannot sit back or you stick to the chair. The problem is that the furniture is stained now and won’t wipe clean - I tried. Pretty unpleasant. Lunch and dinners are buffet and it was only on day 7 we got a meal where we actually cleaned the plate and were pleasantly surprised. It seems that the policy here is to stack it high but sell it cheap. Very disappointing. That said the pudding are nearly always very good especially the bread and butter pudding. The cheese is kept out in the open so it’s soft whether it’s meant to be or not - and not very hygienic for a perishable food. Pools are lovely - no complaints and the location on the beach is good. Ice creams are lovely - even if served with nonchalance - same for the coffee shop. I wondered whether I was being too critical until I met the Marriott member who is clearly well travelled throughout the chain and she echoed my thoughts. having also stayed in 4 + star hotels, I know the standards to be maintained and so I feel comfortable leaving this review. I hope the management will pass these observations directly to Marriot as it’s their name above the door and I expected much much better. Barbados is beautiful but pick wisely - I thought I had!! Food was fresh varied and delicious, we ate out a couple of times during our stay (plenty of places on foot) but actually preferred the food in the hotel. Cocktails were top notch, and plenty of cold beer. Bar staff were attentive and made sure you were looked after. Location is perfect, I liked to use the Sandals side of the beach for calmer water but truly stunning coastline. My four year old loved the kids club, was a lovely air conditioned classroom type setting where she could get out of the sun and do crafts. Entertainment is quite low key, but that suited us well having a young family and in bed early. That said you are minutes from st Lawrence gap so plenty of choice Overall we were well looked after and would definitely return. Thanks Turtle beach - ignore the bad reviews Read less
