Surrounded by lush tropical gardens, leading down to a lovely 1.5km beach, the Veranda Palmar Beach is great for those seeking tranquil surrounds. There are plenty of water sports to enjoy too, including diving, sailing and fishing. For the less energetic, the golden beaches are a perfect haven for sunbathing. We stayed ten nights at Veranda Palmar Beach, including the night of December 25, 2024, paying nearly double the usual rate. In return, we expected a stay worthy of that price. But what we encountered was a completely different reality. We are a mixed couple. And like John and Yoko, we thought we lived in a world that had evolved a little. In 2024, in the age of AI, we believed that human common sense had caught up with technology. But this stay was a harsh reminder that some mindsets haven’t kept up. My wife, who was actually the one who chose this hotel, was looked at, treated, and served differently — by a large part of the staff. Coldness, distance, lack of attention… while other women, visibly from Europe, received an entirely different level of service. Was it racism? Sexism? A form of cultural conservatism mixed with historical wounds? Maybe all of the above. But regardless of the reason: it’s not acceptable. We even saw some waitresses, clearly jealous of my wife, refusing to clear her plates. It’s getting harder every day to accept that the woman I love — who lives, works, pays taxes, and consumes like everyone else in a Western country — still has to prove that she deserves the same respect as anyone else. During the stay, some staff members looked at us with such marked hostility that we felt unwelcome. It was borderline uncomfortable. This wasn’t just a feeling: it was a tangible tension. And on Christmas night, the situation became absurd: an impromptu (or tolerated) party on the public beach right next to the hotel blasted loud music until 2 a.m. It seemed like everyone — including staff — was part of it, without a moment's concern for the guests trying to sleep. What’s worse is the general sense of indifference, even from some vacationers, as if we were an anomaly in an otherwise well-oiled system. If I was in charge of this hotel, I would take the opportunity to remind everyone (for example, through labeling on water bottles distributed during meals) that no one chooses anything before they’re born, and from that perspective, it makes no sense to mistreat or discriminate against each other based on the colors or shapes of our bodies — which, in the end, all turn to molecules. Everything on Earth is connected — even the water we drink today might be the same water consumed thousands of years ago by other people, other beings, other civilizations. Respect, too, should flow like water: freely, without distinction, and in a continuous cycle. A beautiful setting is not enough to make up for a dehumanizing welcome. The guest experience is not just about a smile on the surface. It’s above all a matter of how one is seen, considered, and treated with dignity. And in this regard, we were deeply disappointed.
