These past few years I have been travelling to New York a LOT. Often for business.. often for pleasure and have been put in a variety of places / locations around the city. Some good, many mediocre tourist traps. This Virgin Hotel is in my opinion one of the exceptional gems in the city. Swanky, funky, classy yet not in the slightest bit pretentious as many 5* hotels of this standard are. Unparalleled views of the city, a great on site SPA / Gym, bars an outdoor pool... but when I think long and hard why I enjoyed our stay so much (we had 4 rooms) it comes down to the staff. Jestin Perez the Front of House Manager went above and beyond to ensure a comfortable and happy stay. It's the attention to detail, the little touches, check-ins and greetings each day 'hows your stay? do you have everything you need?' that make you feel like the whole hotel really are happy be there and create enjoyable experiences for their guests. In a world where I feel like that kind of attentive service is dying here Jestin and the team are making up for it in spades. I recently took a Virgin Cruise and was again surprised with how great the service and happy the staff seemed, here again Jestin is a real credit to the Virgin global brand. Ok so down to the detail. Location is great just far enough to be out of the crazy crowds of Times Sq but equally close enough to walk in. It's on 30th and Broadway with lots to do in the area, a stroll to 34th st shops / Macy's and Empire State building which you can get a great view of from the city view rooms or the terrace bar. A couple of nights waiting for friends I sat and had great chats with the bar staff while they whizzed around attentively mixing up some killer cocktails. One night there was a live band, again like the hotel, fresh and vibey. As well as the terrace there is a great rooftop 'speakeasy' style bar, Everdene restaurant and outdoor (seasonal) pool area. The Gym is well equipped and the SPA is excellent. The rooms are spacious for New York, every sq ft is appreciated here, I promise you if you aren't a frequent visitor to NY, space is a commodity and even the best hotels here have tiny rooms. I fully recommend upgrading to a Grand Chamber Suite / Empire view if you are able, however the Chamber rooms are equally spacious for the city. The rooms are clean and well appointed with all the usual amenities and some cool 'control by your phone' features. My favourite touch however was that the well stocked mini bar was stocked at street prices! I don't know why more hotels don't do this. Much more tempting to dig into on a late night :) Being a newer hotel it was great to also be able to get a quiet nights sleep. The city is often roaring with sirens which often keep you up but it wasn't the case here. My one gripe was there was only one option of pillow. I like a firm pillow which I usually have to ask for at hotels but wasn't the end of the world. So all in all 9.9/10. I'll definitely be checking for availability here first for my future stays. I've already recommended it to many friends! Read less

My room was comfortable and modern. The almost floor to ceiling windows present a crazy view of Midtown. There is a cool lounge, restaurant, club in the hotel called Everdene. Great outside pool. When you walk in, the staff is right there to help. They are situated in a calm, quaint, and comfortable lobby. Time Square, Central Park, restaurants, up and mid scale shopping are nearby. CitiBike rentals are adjacent to the hotel on Broadway. Midtown can be hectic but not this location. The outside and inside of the hotel have an uncanny way of removing you from busy Manhattan. Great price! Great location! Read less

Just finished our week stay here, and have to give 2/5 … far from a five star hotel experience you’d expect. Firstly, the pros. The hotel is central, in a good location and the views are great (that being at an additional cost though). Staff are very welcoming, friendly and helpful, even getting us a taxi to the airport and loading our luggage on. We were also welcomed with chocolate covered strawberries in our room which was a nice touch. Now the cons… It’s the details that add up, which really put a dampener on the experience. The rooms were dirty. Not what you expect for 5 star. Previous guests rubbish had been left behind in drawers and on top of the wardrobe, including a used amenity kit and alcohol bottles. The floors were covered in hair and crumbs left from previous guests. There was also thick dust on light fixtures and doors, which could easily be cleaned. (See photos) Following on from that, we opted to have housekeeping twice during the stay. We could tell our sheets were never changed due to a stain mark on the sheets. When housekeeping had been furniture had been left askew, dirty towels hadn’t been taken and bins not emptied. It’s quite frustrating especially when you see housekeeping staff constantly on their phones. (Whether that’s to do with work I’m not sure, but it gives the wrong impression) The walls are very thin. For a newly built hotel you would’ve thought there’d be better soundproofing. We had to call down twice as our neighbours were shouting and ‘trying to party’ (their words) at 11.30pm til 2am. Security came up but that didn’t change anything, so headphones were needed to try and sleep. Then minor things like only one dressing gown in the room for two people. The SMEG fridge in the bedroom is exceptionally LOUD. Overall it was nice to try but it’s unfortunate as it had great potential. Read less
