Hoyo Hoyo Safari Lodge

Kruger and surrounds, South Africa

Virgin rating

The hotel

Among the Leadwood trees of Kruger National Park, and by the banks of the dry Mluwati River, six thatched domes sprout from the bush. The result is an intimate and memorable space to return to after safari game-drives to see the 'Big Five'. These rustic yet luxurious rondavels may feel traditional, with their earthy tangerine tones, organic materials, and geometric design details, but contemporary wood and glass panels unfold to reveal private decks, giving a modern twist that’s replicated in traveller touches like Hoyo Hoyo’s infinity edged pool, post-safari wellness treatments, and high teas with cakes and pastries.

We stayed a fabulous 4 days at Hoyo Hoyo. From the very beginning to the unavoidable departure, we were treated to some of the most amazing customer service. I have worked in the hotel/ restaurant industry for most of my life and must take my hats off to the team here. The drives amazing and Suit Boy was great, I really enjoyed our time with him. Location could not be any better, elephants drinking while you sip on a gin and tonic. Thulani thank you for always going above and beyond, intact everyone did. Great food too. The rooms are lovely, not over the top, just right. Thank you guys for giving us a lifetime of memories. I hope we can come back for an even longer stay. Conor and Judit Read less

Unfortunately we were disappointed. The whole lodge and the room seemed old and poorly maintained. The wooden fence near the outdoor shower was damaged, we could see people beyond from the shower and people could see us in the shower. Unfortunately we were disappointed. The whole lodge and the room seemed old and poorly maintained. The wooden fence near the outdoor shower was damaged, we could see people beyond from the shower and people could see us in the shower. The sink was leaking because of the incorrect distance between the faucet and the basin (see attached photo). When we arrived, nobody helped us with the luggages, we had to carry our luggages by ourselves. Nobody made up our room in the morning during the safari (in other hotels it happened) and nobody filled the bottles of drinking water in the room. In the evening, at 10 to 7 pm we came back from the safari and we needed to go to our room to change our clothes before dinner (by then it was cold) but the staff told us that the return to the room was not planned and that they had some blankets for us for dinner. We asked again and then we could go 5 minutes to the room between safari and dinner. Staff is friendly but hasty. Good lunch and dinner but lack of choice and not abundant portions. Poor breakfast. Funny safari but a bit hasty, few explanations and little involvment of participants. Unfortunately we did not find the boasted luxury; the payed price is absolutely not in line with the offer. A wonderful experience… our accommodation was comfortable, private and had amazing views over the dry river bed.The food quality and menus were impressive and the service was excellent. We had some amazing drives with Pharence and Maynard and they willingly shared their knowledge of the animals and the land. We enjoyed their company.

We were a group of 11 people ( 5 couples and 1 single) visiting the lodge from the UK. What can I say except that we had the most wonderful experience staying at the lodge. We have stayed at many different lodges over the years and Hoyo Hoyo was up there as one of the best. The highlight had to be sitting in comfy chairs with cold beer and not 50 metres away watching a herd of elephant enjoying the waterhole. The staff were friendly, attentive and most helpful, we had an issue with our hire vehicle breaking down and the manager sorted out transport for our departure back to Joburg, further to this all of the staff gave a surprise birthday rendition to two of our party on our last night. So from all of us now back in the UK a big thank you for making our stay truly memorable at the Hoyo Hoyo Safari Lodge Read less

Absolutely awful hotel/company. I unfortunately contracted malaria, and had a few nights booked at this hotel for my birthday which I had to cancel. As I was lying in hospital my girlfriend was calling up the hotel who stated that they could not delay our trip, and would not be giving us any of our money back. In fact they said that they were okay with the idea of us driving to the hotel and staying there whilst I had malaria, in effect putting all other guests at the hotel at risk. They are willing to put mine, and other guests safety at risk just so they can make a quick buck. If you're thinking of going I highly recommend you note the 30 day no refund policy, and that you are 100% certain that you will not have any serious matter come up around your dates as this hotel will not care and just take your money. The staff are rude and very unsympathetic. Read less
