This was our 4th visit. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves but really noticed a deterioration in standards. The rooms are looking very tired and some staff look disinterested in their jobs.It was lovely to see some familiar faces eg Sharron,Michelle,Ryan,Lavell,Tremayne ,Rashidi,Rashida and Tamisha who were excellent.Unfortunately the weather was not that good and very rainy which ruined our favourite poolside buffet evenings. We actually booked to return in January 2025 but slightly regret it.Sadly the gym which my husband and I use daily has become very dilapidated and still remains the same as it was in 1918.The gym is in desparate need of an update(very important to us ).This could easily achieved and would be a massive bonus. The Beach house is now charging for drinks etc .The original Beach house at Thunder Bay was idyllic back in our first 3 visits but sadly no longer. It is an expensive holiday and it now appears that the owners are cutting corners to reduce expenditure on the WOW factors that have previously ensured repeat visiting guests. Not the way to go !!! This was our second visit to Sugar Cane Club- the first visit in 2019. We did have a great 9 night stay and we were given the same room as we did in2019 at our request which was good. The hotel also recognised our 40th wedding anniversary which again was thoughtful. However we did have a few negatives whereas on our first visit we had none. We the standard of the food in both restaurants were nowhere near as good as previously. The choices were repetitive and often disappointing. The other thing was that some of the staff were abrupt and not looking happy to be at work which was so different to the happy smiling staff we met previously. The gardeners were very friendly and seemed to work hard in the lovely gardens but appeared to be trying to catch up all the time - a few more would have made a difference to the immaculately kept gardens previously. The hotel is set in the most wonderful peaceful location which just adds to the away from it all feel. I came away feeling fully relaxed. Surrounded by beautiful, well maintained gardens and with plenty of wildlife the Garden Suites are large, bright and airy. The daily shuttle bus take minutes to get to Speightstown and buses enable you to get out and about and explore Barbados at it's best . Alternatively you could hire a car for a couple of days and do so at your own pace. Apart from one less than friendly member of bar staff who didn't appear to want to be there and one quite stern receptionist the staff are absolutely amazing: namely Paulette, Kim, Kareen, Michelle, Rashidi, Nikita, Leo, Tamisha, Mitilene and her wonderful housekeeping staff and Tremayne and Nicholas the shuttle drivers. Not forgetting April who gives the most amazing massages and Luvall who brings you fresh coconuts. They all went out of their way to ensure that you had the best time possible. I would return in a heartbeat. Read less
