We arrived at Sandals South Coast less than 24 hours before it was hit by Hurricane Beryl. We knew from the start that this was not going to be the holiday we had planned, but then that’s the risk we took booking during storm season - This time we got unlucky! On our arrival at the hotel it was being prepped for the storms arrival, workers were busy battening everything down and boarding up all the windows. We found great comfort in the quality of our room - We had a Long Beach Butler Room which was absolutely incredible with a great bathroom and lounge area. The windows and doors were of great quality and we felt totally safe in our room as the storm blew through. After the storm the buildings had held up incredibly well, unfortunately the same could not be said for the surrounding grounds with multiple trees literally snapped in half - It was sad to see the many years hard work the groundskeepers had obviously done before hand, damaged to such an extent. However from daybreak the day following the storm we were reassured with the way things were going to go. Workers were busy assessing the damage and systematically clearing the paths and making areas safe for guests, there was absolutely no delay at all. Unfortunately we did experience an unforeseen problem shortly after, the generators failed and we went without power and running water for approximately 22 hours. It was tough, but we were kept informed of the situation and were reassured that the management were doing everything they could to fix the problem. At this time the whole island had little functioning utilities and all surrounding roads were pretty much impassable, making the trip to get the spare parts quite difficult, however the management put a plan in place and it worked. When compared to the fact that many of the workers at the hotel had damaged homes and were left with no power or water for several / many days - 22 hours without power and water was not too bad at all. For the first few days after the storm food was limited, with a buffet service running. The food however was absolutely fine, it wasn’t as good as the various restaurants that would have been open in normal conditions, there was no way it could be, but it was still prepared and delivered by the staff who remained focussed on giving a great service despite the bad situation. All staff at the hotel worked tirelessly to get things back to normal as soon as possible, being a guest there at that time I actually felty quite guilty being on vacation having the staff tending to us, whilst their own homes had been badly damaged too! As the days progressed the hotel quickly got all the pools cleaned out and the beach was cleared of all the debris too. Unfortunately it did lead to us not being able to do all the trips and activities we had planned to do, but we did end up spending every day at the beach, with the restaurants reopening serving great food after a short period too. We would not have wished to have been anywhere else during the storm. We saw several social media posts showing other hotels putting all the guests on sun beds in conference rooms etc, we were in a much better position than the guests at those other hotels. Unfortunately we did not take everyone’s name to mention in this review specifically, but we can definitely recommend our butlers Shamar and Akeem, they both delivered a faultless service. The manager O’Brian was great, constantly walking around the hotel overseeing the clean up operation and keeping guests informed of progress throughout the 10 days we were there. I can only imagine how stressful it was for him to deal with how little sleep he would’ve had. The entertainment team were absolutely fantastic, putting on various activities and shows throughout the days. Every one of the entertainment team were extremely talented (especially the singers) and when put together, gave an outstanding performance every single time. They were ‘second to none’ the best entertainment team we have ever had at any hotel. In our opinion every single worker at the hotel deserves recognition for delivering a great service, during an incredibly difficult time. We will definitely return to the hotel to (hopefully) have the holiday we originally planned. Read less

Sandal review Twice now my wife and I have traveled to Sandals south Coast the first time was a short visit 4 day three nights in the Butler swim up one bedroom suite. As was this last time although we stayed for 7 night this last time. Yes, we are going back to Sandals next year for another 7 nights this time we will try Sandals in Montego Bay. If you think an all-inclusive resort is expensive you might want to rethink that thought. Both my wife and I really enjoy the having the Butler option added to our stay. It may not be for everyone. Having a Bob Markey or a signature Pina-colada served poolside when have a thirst is really nice. “# Watch the Bob Marleys they can snick up on you.” Going out to dinner at one of their onsite restaurants which are all 5 star if you ask us. With your Butler you get served right away, without you make reservations which is still good service for sure. But no waiting is nice also. The cleanliness of the rooms is immaculate. The pools and landscaping are a walk in paradise everything is kept looking well maintained. From the time you come through the entrance at a Sandals resort, to the greeting you will receive walking into the reception area. Where it’s like they have known you all their lives and very happy to see again even thought they have never seen you before. We recommend you listen to your orientation and welcome because there is so much to do. All sorts of water activities to from sunset sailing to deep sea diving, A simple paddle boarding to a little kayaking it is all there on site. Sailing, fishing, even a glass bottom boat to observe the natural colorful fish in their habitat. One big idea is shut off all electronics we did! No cell phone, no laptop, nothing total disconnect from the outside even left the in room tv off. The first day was a little strange not looking at our phone or reading e-mails. The last was even harder knowing it was time to turn them on again. We are giving ourselves one day a week we will shut everything off and just enjoy each other’s company. Read less

My husband and I arrived at this resort on 23rd June for a ten night stay to celebrate our anniversary. We had advised on no fewer than 5 occasions- at booking, online check in, on arrival and two subsequent times on resort when asked by staff if we were celebrating anything - but nothing was done until 7 days in when we returned to our room to find a piece of cake and the bath filled with water and three balloons on top. For a company that specialises is occasional travel- we felt this was poor and miles apart from our previous experience at sandals St Lucia. We booked a starlight walkout room- please be advised that these rooms in the french section are the last ones that have not yet been renovated and it’s starting to show. We immediately noticed an issue with the air conditioner and reported it as faulty to club sandals. Nothing happened. On the second day of our trip my husband who is asthmatic again went to complain because the room had a heavy damp smell. A manager arrived and agreed- there was strong smell and despite the aircon being set at 62, the room wasn’t cold. She advised us to go to dinner and return and they would have a plan. On our return they moved us to the Dutch village to a room on the third floor which was far superior and if we were to return we would book it again. Hurricane Beryl was due to hit the day of our departure and unfortunately for us, they closed the airport on the Tuesday night meaning we couldn’t leave. I will say now that the preparation for the hurricane and the briefings beforehand by the staff were excellent and we felt safe. We received a letter to our room advising that the first night of our delayed stay would be complimentary and subsequent nights would be charged at the ‘discounted rate’ of $500 per night. Now, we didn’t even pay that rate for our trip- so that was going to be a major problem, but our issues were only beginning. The resort went on to generator power from the night of the hurricane- we had power and internet throughout the storm and the resort came through relatively unscathed save for tree and vegetation damage. Unfortunately once the storm passed, the resort lost phone and internet access- no one could make any calls out of the resort and therefore no one could rearrange any travel plans. Further issue hit when at around 9pm on Thursday 4th July, the generator broke. We were advised at a briefing the next day that a team had been sent to Kingston to retrieve a spare part- obviously this was going to be several hours of a trip given the roads etc but we were told continually that it would be fixed ‘in a couple of hours’- this was clearly a lie and frustrating. We had no power and no running water for 21 hours and staff were completely resistant to requests to be moved resorts. I queried at what point they would evacuate the resort due on public health grounds as no one could flush a toilet or wash their hands in their rooms- it was only a matter of time before people got sick. I should also point out that during this time there were new guests arriving to check in who had phoned the sandals corporation beforehand to be told that everything was open and operational- in short they were lied to. The generator was eventually fixed at around 7pm, but it did not restore phone or internet like they said it would- meaning people were still stuck there and unable to make travel plans to leave. Staff allowed guests to use office computers to check travel plans on an emergency connection they had- but we live in the days of two factor authentication and when trying to book anything with a credit card it would send a code to your phone- which you couldn’t receive. It was a complete nightmare. On the Saturday morning I advised that they either needed to move me to a resort with communication capability or take me to the British embassy in Kingston- at this stage we had lost an international flight from New York with British airways because we had been unable to contact them. A member of staff- Kenro I believe his name was- took me and my husband in his own car abojt 6 miles down the road where he got signal on his mobile phone and let us try calling. It didn’t work- he took us to what I can only describe as a tin shack of a restaurant that he had the Wi-Fi code for and we sat in their car park and I had the best signal I’d had in a fortnight and was able to Skype call British airways and make new travel plans. I find it incredulous that this literal hut with a generator had perfect signal and yet the fancy sandals resort a few miles up the road couldn’t manage it. At 3pm on the Saturday they finally restored Wi-Fi access- but we were by this point facing a hill of 4 days because we hadn’t been able to leave. Showing them our original invoice we got this reduced and will fight to claim it back with our travel insurance, but they should not have charged anyone for the 21 hours without power or water. We also asked for a letter on sandals headed paper detailing the dates the generator was down and that this resulted in no means of communication- despite being told it would be delivered to our room- it never was. This resort has a lot of positives - the staff will do anything to try and help you but it is clear they are being dictated to by the head office party line and are limited in that regard. The food is average- certainly nowhere near the standard of our previous trip to sandals in St Lucia. The resort is also incredibly remote and I wouldn’t return based on that purely because of what happened in the wake of the hurricane. At least if we had been based on Montego Bay, we would have been able to get to the airport to have a conversation with someone Read less

Went there 3 days after hurricane Beryl and, even though the grounds were not meticulous like they had been in the past, we understood that there would be some imperfections right after a category 4 hurricane. The only things that were not “normal” is that they were slightly understaffed for the first few days and the WiFi was intermittent for the whole week. But that did not bother us. We still enjoyed all the amenities. We met some other awesome guests and had a great time. I went scuba diving and my wife went to the spa. We also did the catamaran sunset cruise. Everything was very professional and fun. The quality of night entertainment is great. The costuming has improved from previous visits. We’ve been to Barbados and Beaches Ocho Rios. We’ll be returning to South Coast next year! Read less

I first want to say that I am always so, so appreciative of the reviews people take the time to leave here and other sources, They are painfully helpful and I hope I can do justice to what others have done by offering some sort of ease or understanding. With that said, I first would like to thank writer Jo S (New York). THANK YOU! Thank you for equipping me with such details about the rooms/villas. We went for our Honey-vesary which was mentioned in our details but nobody acknowledged it, laughable and disappointing at the same time. Staying in the OverWater Bungalows was a financial hit but glad we made it happen. THE GOOD: butler serves which took us from room to resort and set-up meals, provided snacks in private car, ocean views, ocean time, 24/7 room service, microwave (though I called and two of them said there aren't any in the villas. sounds like a staff meeting with property updated session), cell phone they give you to contact butler and night butler (he's for after hours/10pm), gratuity is already paid, airport lounge, private car which will make stops for you upon request, butlers and drivers were Freaking Amazing people and staff, hands off check-in process, house shoes, free sandals tote bag, local venders on beach near jerk shack/food truck, and the fact this is adults only so no kids! THE BAD: came across two roaches, no milestone acknowledgment though it was confirmed received from the butler manager, I mentioned to not bring champagne to greet us but sparking cider but that too wasn't reviewed. I'm not quit sure if they read anything on my request form that was completed days way before arrival. Our private car was also dirty upon arrival. Some of the food was a bit disappointing on the resort. THE VILLAS: Now, let's get to the villas. I TOTALLY agree with Jo who stated to push for room/villas #5-9. We stayed in #6009 and when I thought about the Jo review while viewing villas #12-10 to our left and #1-4, I understood. Below is a cut and paste which you should review as it helped me a lot. If looking at the photo, the villas on the left or those closest to you while viewing are rooms 12, 11, and 10. the numbers start to the right. "Our room, room 6006 was fantastic and had full ocean view. Rooms 6005 - 6007 have the best views best by far. The over the water bungalow rooms are spaced out in a heart shape so the only true ocean view rooms are the ones towards the top of the heart (room numbers go from 6001 through 6012; and 6001 and 6012 are both at the bottom of the heart). Originally we were placed in room 6002 and it would have ruined our vacation if we were to stay in that room the entire time. We choose this property and location solely based on the fact we were going to have an over the water bungalow room and we were very disappointed when we were placed in room 6002. Room 6001, 6002 and 6003 face the beach with a tree line that takes up almost the entire beach so it feels like it’s a jungle view. It does not face the ocean. Additionally you’re looking at a security area with a wire fence. The view isn’t great and in December there is no direct sun that hits the patio (eek!!). Rooms 6010, 6011 and 6012 have direct sun but they face the resort and have very little privacy. The resort needs to re-categorize these rooms. There should be: Oceanfront over the water bungalows, jungle view over the water bungalows and resort view over the water bungalows and they be priced as such. It is not fair for someone in room 6001 or 6012 to pay as much as someone in 6005 or 6006. They are totally different experiences. Be sure that when you book your room you secure rooms at the top of the heart facing the ocean; 6004 - 6008. It’s important!" Now, the storm just hit so the villas #10-12 were damaged. Others too! I think this helped us because it pushed us to the other rooms, who knows for sure, but we are just thankful we had the room experience we wanted. The resort being repaired didn't bother us as we understood and we weren't on the beach/resort anyways, so. The room views were amazing!!! THE BUTLER CELL: They give you a cell phone and charger to keep handy. We left it in the room mostly because there's a $200 charge if anything happens to it. Also, just didn't need to take it. It, too, comes with a wall jack and charger you can use. THE FOOD: It was ok and would say horrible for the amount of money spent. I agree the room service menu is good but can be a bit limiting, though thankful it exist, really am. The are drinks items, breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, enough to provide you something different each night. I was shocked no plantains were available, it's that why we're here? , must be costly maybe? I only enjoyed two desserts as their main dessert place caters to only crepes and who wants that? I wanted American cake, etc. Oh well. :) The only cake option I saw was the chocolate lava cake which was delicious! Ordered three. We also ate the Jerk Shack OFTEN. That chicken was delicious I tell you and the fish!!! The egg rolls and omelette were also good which are from the takeout menu. The sweet potato cheesecake too was eye raising. What was bad was the fish that I also felt it sat out for a bit and didn't want to finish it. It was from the take out menu. I love breakfast so I ordered the French toast which was not crunchy lol, the pancakes and which were dry. THE GENERAL: I'd bring a tripod to take pictures of yourselves and if possible, a water resistant phone. Wifi service was in and out but the entire time we stayed we couldn't use the tv. didn't bother me much but pained the husband. Again, our drivers and butler's AMAZING!!! Drive is 90min to airport. Word Is to not stay on MBJ resort due to airport noise. Would I return again? Probably not but somewhere different or would return to stay at the general hotel rooms. I'm beyond glad we did it, very thankful. With humor, the trip ended with Southwest loosing our bags upon our return. Read less
