The hotel

An enchanting island paradise, once the home of a Carib Indian chief according to legend, Young Island is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Virtually a tropical garden, it consists of 13 acres, home to giant almond, mango, coffee and breadfruit trees. At the heart of it all is the Young Island Hotel, overlooking a beautiful stretch of golden sand. Here, hammocks hang under thatched roofs and the cooling trade winds are ever constant. As is only right when residing on a Caribbean island, non-motorised water sports are offered, including kayaking, pedaloes and dinghy sailing. Just offshore is the Coconut Bar where drinks are served in fresh coconuts — you can swim there and back. Dining at Young Island is a truly romantic experience with meals taken under thatched kiosks near the beach. A sumptuous four-course meal is prepared five nights a week by award-winning chefs with fresh seafood always on the menu. On Wednesdays, it's a local buffet meal and on Saturday, you'll enjoy a barbeque and buffet. Each meal offers six loaves of freshly baked bread — white, coconut, banana, raisin, cinnamon and wheat — it’s a real treat and one they are justly famous for. A fabulous freshwater swimming pool is perfect for cooling dips and there is tennis available day and night on a floodlit court. Spacious, cottage style accommodation is either close to the beach or on a hillside with breathtaking panoramic views.

Love it! Stayed 8 days on a business trip. This is a small, intimate resort island. SVG is where the first Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed and it is not over run yet with tourism. SVG is a friendly country that enjoys a good feta (Party). This is a proud Third World country. Do not come here if you expect a Four Seasons resort. If you do visit with that expectation, don’t leave a negative review that you weren’t treated like the colonial Queen because you failed to do your due diligence, as a few reviewers have. The staff here is friendly but they are modest and humble; not intrusive to interrupt your conversations or quiet time, which I appreciate. If you need someone constantly in at your shadow asking what more they can do for you, don’t come here. If you need something, speak up and they do their best to accommodate. If you want to feel unplugged (while still having Wi-Fi) like syncing up with diff cultures, foods, and are looking for a quite getaway, this may be right. This resort is romantic and beautiful, the rooms are cozy & lovely, service is good, the restaurant isn’t close to a Michelin star but the food is consistently tasty, and meals on the beach in fresh, unpolluted air are beautiful.. The menu isn't as vast as some from large developed cities are used to, but this is a remote tropical island - they do very well with local options. Try all their fresh baked breads! The open concept bar on the beach is also beautiful. Almost every cottage is directly on the shoreline. Turn down service includes making your bed up, straightening up your room/bathroom, and turning on the AC unit. Our beds were comfortable, not too hard or soft. It’s outdoor showers only but they are private and the climate is consistently warm, and so invigorating. There is often loud music from across the water on weekends. I’m a light sleeper, I wore earplugs and slept soundly every night. If you want to leave the resort and go to the mainland, it’s an easy 4 to 5 minute boat ride on a small covered ferry that runs most hours. The ferry was complementary and we tipped the driver. The water was the perfect temp for swimming-not too cold or warm. Mosquitoes are a nuisance in most warm climates so bring bug spray. If I remember correctly, it takes approx 30 minutes to get from the airport to the resort due to reduced speed limits and ferry. Carnaval is big here too if you enjoy that. Read less

Best holiday! My husband and I spent eight night on YIR and I can honestly say it was one (if not) my best holiday so far. I fell in love with St Vincent again. The food, although not a lot to choose from- what was available was delicious. Apart from the loud music from a bar across the bay(one night) it was a very relaxing holiday. Thanks YIR. Read less

As I sit awaiting my flight home, I can honestly say leaving Young Island is like leaving family which leaves a longing for your return. My husband and I were able to spend 11 glorious nights on Young Island this visit and thoroughly enjoyed every moment. We stayed in cottage 9 and appreciated its close proximity to the beach, pool as well as the restaurant and bar! Listening to the waves crashing outside our cottage was a definite delight for us. The bed was so very comfortable and enjoyed each night’s sleep (and afternoon naps)! We always enjoy the experience of the outside shower! The cottage had everything we could want or need. The food whether at breakfast, lunch or dinner was exquisite and the staff were just always so friendly - they have truly captured our hearts! We appreciated greatly the hard work of all the staff. The ladies who cleaned our room each day are all so lovely and exceptional at what they do. Hermus, Charles and Lennox all deserve a mention who busily look after transporting guests to and from Young Island and found them all to be a such a pleasure and good laugh! Of course I cannot fail to mention the resort’s long standing General Manager Bianca Porter who always makes us feel so very welcome and goes that extra mile to ensure our stay provides all that we could need. Thank you. We certainly will ensure our return very soon! Read less

From the very start this place was terrible and not even worth half the US$650 a night we paid. The web site photos and description are the most misleading we have ever seen. From the very start this place was terrible and not even worth half the US$650 a night we paid. The web site photos and description are the most misleading we have ever seen. They give the impression of luxury when it’s all actually quite basic, and some aspects quite poor. It’s just a five minute ferry ride from the mainland, but on landing at the dock there was nobody to greet us or take our bags - thankfully they are both on wheels. At the reception area it was very hot and humid and we expected a refreshing moist towel as every resort has offered on this six week pan-Caribbean trip, but none was offered, and when I asked I was given some facial tissue. We had bungalow #6, which sat on a point opposite the mainland. Furnished in tropical style there was a living room, bedroom, very small bathroom with an outside shower recess and a patio with plunge pool and a sea front gazebo. The windows had all been left open with the A/C off so it was brutally hot inside. Surely knowing that guests were arriving they should have had it cooled down. The small island has lush vegetation so we went exploring but you cannot go far. As we walked we crossed paths with a woman who returned our greeting but said nothing else at all so we assumed she was another guest. We had an invitation to the manager’s cocktail party at 6.30 but there was nobody at the bar to welcome us. The aforementioned woman arrived ten minutes later so couldn’t even manage to be on time for her own party. We saw her talking to other guests, there were just 8 couples including us, but after over a half hour she still hadn’t come to greet us even though we were the only new arrivals that day. The dinner menu at the resort had no fish on it even though we are surrounded by the Caribbean so we had found a seafood place in town. We went to her to inquire about it but she didn’t know anything other than directions. In all our travels, almost 170 countries so far, she is hands down the worst resort/hotel manager. The breakfast was mediocre at best with the most pathetic fruit plate ever and watered down juice that tasted like it was a mix. The bacon, eggs and toast were good though. With just a couple of exceptions the staff were not at all friendly, which is totally unacceptable in a place like this. At the bar on our second day the manager walked past but yet again said nothing. The two worst aspects through are that it’s impossible to sleep. Right across from the island is a bar that starts playing very lounge, thumping music about 11PM and it goes on until about 6AM. Why the neighbors and hotels haven’t complained to the police is beyond us. The second thing is that there are bright lights along the paths to the rooms and with no black-out curtains it never gets dark in the bedroom. We have never been so happy to leave a place. Read less
