The hotel

The Cityview knows its audience. In one of the world’s most dynamic metropolises, this urban outpost delivers the slick city styling, high-tech touches, handy hotel features, and ‘centre-of-everything’ location every discerning international traveller’s after. Bang-on-trend, you’re greeted by a living plant wall that sets the tone of this modern downtown Kowloon hotel. While the styling  and international buffet may feel reassuringly familiar, the Cantonese cuisine of The Balcony and Thai tastes of Amazing (served under a plant-draped pergola for that ‘al fresco dining’ feel), give an exciting flavour of the East – one backed up by its location in the entertainment and shopping district, just steps from Yau Ma Tei subway station and near Hong Kong’s famous markets.

This is our second stay at the hotel. Don’t be fooled that you are put off by the letters of YMCA. The hotel had friendly staff and were accommodating to our needs. Location of the hotel is perfect, right near the station and the ladies market also some fantastic street food within walking distance - would stay here again. The laundry shop is also right across the road if you require the service.

**Update - within 24 hours of posting a 1-star review, the hotel emailed to say they would refund the unstayed night but the refund could date 3-5 weeks to appear. I received the money back, but still disappointing that it took so many back and forth conversations and a negative review for them to finally agree. As a result I have increased the review by another star** I never usually post bad reviews of an establishment, opting to only offer good reviews for an excellent experience. This one however was handled so poorly, with an unacceptable "solution" offered for a serious mishap. I stayed at the Cityview Hotel 8 years ago and had a lovely stay with a comfortable modern room, a nice breakfast buffet, and without incident. This time around I was not so fortunate - the only thing going for it was the location - right next to Yau Ma Tei station. The beds were as hard as the floor, the breakfast buffet food quality was nowhere near as nice as the previous stay, no bathroom amenities or bottled water provided like other hotels, and on my final night an unexpected guest gained access to my room with a keycard. The hotel had checked someone else into my room before I had even checked out. This was a MAJOR breach of security and trust, and it was fortunate that I was in the room and in bed. Despite being embarrassed by the situation, had I not been in the room the guest could have stolen my passport and belongings by gaining access to my room. As such I quickly packed up and checked out early, opting not to stay the final night. The hotel apologised, and I requested a refund for the unstayed night due to their terrible mistake, but this was dishonoured continuously after back and forth correspondence, with the offering a "suite upgrade and complimentary buffet dinner on my next stay". As I am based in New Zealand, I have no idea when I will be returning to Hong Kong, and after the incident and uncomfortable stay, I doubt whether I will be returning to this hotel ever again. There are much nicer options at $1800HKD/night out there. I had to fork out for a night of accomodation at a different hotel, along with transportation, to the tune of another $1800HKD. Hotels.com also fought for me - although I had booked through them but paid the hotel directly, but received no positive outcome from the hotel. Cityview, despite you claiming to take these situations seriously, your disputes resolution and taking responsibility for your terrible mistakes is sorely lacking. Any reasonable establishment would understand the reasoning and refund a night for making a guest feel unsafe in their accommodations. Read less

Love their creative style on breakfast buffet where you can make your own pancake and toast your bread, catering both Western and Chinese cuisine. It was also good to note that hotel offers free water at the lobby. I just wish the hotel could provide a better quality of pillow as it was too thin. Overall great experience, it's near MTR and Bus stops so you'll easily access the location. Read less
