The hotel

A luxurious throwback to the colonial days when Mauritius’ sugar industry thrived. Rambling grounds, residential atmosphere, and bespoke furnishings create the feel of a Victorian sugar baron's mansion. The homely feel here doesn't mean you forgo resort treats though: there are lovely pools, water sports and exquisite dining and drinking spots, from the Asian Floating Market to the beachside Boathouse and Grill. The UNESCO World Heritage site at Le Morne Mountain provides a befitting backdrop to the resort with some of the world's best diving and kite-surfing only moments away. Days are best spent on the white sand beach, one of the island's best, with its iridescent lagoon.

We loved this resort - the accommodation is spaced out and low level, and to us looked like it has the best spot in Le Morne with the beautiful mountain behind, but towards end of peninsula so very private and quiet. Plus lots of great extras as will go through below. Accommodation: We had a heritage beach front suite which was amazing, literally step out of room onto beach and we absolutely loved it and would book ours again - however all the rooms looked great. They all face the beach and have been really well planned out so they are a kind of triangle going back so even the furthest back rooms still have unobstructed beachfront, they’re just a bit further back with some grass beforehand. Although further back I imagine advantages of those are less sand into your room and probably bit more private - so honestly don’t think there’s a bad room here. The interior of the room is immaculate, I’m sure must have been recently re-furbed. Great shower, massive bath, very comfortable mattress, pillows and as a light sleeper it was perfect as good sound proofing and the blackout curtains/ blinds were excellent. Especially useful if have young children as remember having take suction blinds to some hotels and these wouldn’t be needed here. The whole beach is sheltered by a break - no big waves and shallow paddling, and there’s easy snorkelling right from the beach. One thing I would suggest to the hotel is adding some kind of guidance in rooms to snorkelling responsibly - there’s some decent coral but we saw a number of guests with fins kicking and standing on it. Having been to Hawaii recently where they are rightly extremely vigilant with informing tourists (and enforcing it via volunteers in Coral areas) not to touch the coral/ stand up on it - it felt like hotel could easily include something in room re protecting the coral outside. Possibly they don’t do this as we asked about borrowing snorkel / fins while we were there and they said they don’t recommend snorkelling from beach (they do offer two complimentary snorkelling trips each day which is a great idea). However given that people will still do it then responsible snorkelling guide plus card of local fish to spot would be really useful. Harris an absolute star at the beach bar - there’s an extra beach bar half way down beach between main beach bar and end of resort - and Harris always made sure the cocktails were on hand and even came up with an amazing surprise for a family birthday we had while there. Made our day and will be a birthday we will always remember (and also thanks to the gentleman who supervises the sword champagne opening who was very patient with us!) The kind of service that will keep us coming back. There’s a great selection of complimentary fruit, crisps etc that comes out during the day and I really loved the water / suncream stations they have around the resort - iced water (plain and flavoured) and factor 85 sun cream at points along the beach as well as round the pools. So useful to be able to get a drink and top up cream easily - an excellent extra. Food: As well as the beach and accommodation the food was also 5 star. Our favourite was INDYA - it was Michelin quality fine dining and excellent service there. Best vegetarian options I’ve ever had (not a veggie but the options are just so good often chose them). The Floating Market has a stunning setting and again excellent food and service - some of the best Thai food we’ve ever had (including Thailand!) Atsuko was very good and fantastic fish - and impressed that even though not in the Half Board plan you could still get money off the total so works out ok. We ate in the restaurant but the teppanyaki grill looked fun if that menu suits, however we prefer sushi and sashimi type dishes which were beautifully prepared. The Boathouse was a mixed bag at dinner - loved the location on the beach and the fish there was delicious - but we had mixed service and was only place we ever felt slightly uncomfortable as on birthday we got there and two large tables - we asked to sit on same one we had before (plus is supposed to be first come first served) but one of the waiting staff was visibly annoyed about it. Plus was only restaurant we often had to ask for water refills (I’d be happy to do myself if left on table but kept in ice out of reach which is great for temp but then do need to re-fill). The waiting staff definitely seemed to stay in ’their’ restaurant so it felt like Boathouse hadn’t quite got to the standard of the others. We also ate at the Boathouse at breakfast and Ishtika was brilliant - remembered our coffee orders, perfectly timed service and breakfast was often highlight of the day. Le Manoir does a brilliant buffet however we were there at half term so lots of young children and understandably quite busy and loud - and we were very happy to find there was the option for 12 years and over to have a la carte breakfast at The Boathouse. This is a reason I’d go back to this hotel over others in area as there is a big difference between having a teenager and a pre schooler - and while we can’t stay at adults only hotels, there’s a lot of aspects of young children that aren’t especially relaxing for others and is a game changer having the option to have a quieter more relaxed option at breakfast (plus we do pay more for children over 12 so definitely made it feel extra worth it). I really hope they keep this up as is a brilliant option for those of us with slightly older children who want a calmer dining experience during school holidays. On subject of breakfast there was also a lovely extra of complimentary wake up coffee so as well as Nespresso machine in room, can order coffee to room in morning so we often sat on the beach with our first coffee of the day before going to breakfast. Again an unexpected extra we really enjoyed. The beach bar is a great position and we loved the live music there and really enjoyed the cocktails. One small note on those is that I’d say any time we’ve stayed similar hotel when go for sunset cocktails / drinks, would always get a small bowl of nuts/ crisps/ olives/ some kind of nibbles. Not a big deal but often thought would have had another drink if had had one! Games room - our kids loved the games room. They had games console with fortnite etc as well as a couple of VR headsets. Pool table, tennis table, guitars and poker table. Ours too old for kids club but it looked like a lovely area and they put on activities during day that all the children could walk down the beach and enjoy - like fishing and kite flying. The watersports area is really well run - there were always plenty of paddle boards, pedals and kayaks to take out. It is lovely and sheltered so if wanted to wind surf etc probably best off further down, and they take you to the end nearer The Paradise hotel to water ski. Again another advantage of JW Marriott is that is quiet on the beach in front of rooms as motorised watersports only going on further down or outside the break. I’d have loved the kayaks to be glass bottom though to be able to enjoy the fish from them! There’s a couple of snorkelling trips and glass bottom boat trips every day though so they really do have a lot of that covered. Pools: main pool is huge and big shallow area good for younger children, loved the floating beanbags very comfortable. And also great smaller pool along the beach which is one depth perfect for tween/ teens height - however I would really like them to have signage on that one re wearing swim nappy (as they did at main pool) as when we were there a family had baby in it with bare bottom and few toddlers with just swimmers - would have liked some kind if notice ensuring guests were a bit more considerate. The only part of the hotel I’d say room for improvement is the main pool area. The pool itself is fantastic - huge and lots of shallower areas if you had smaller kids plus great depth for playing in (the complimentary inflated beach balls left in rooms another very thoughtful extra). But we always struggled with service there. I don’t understand why they don’t make the area by the watersports where they put the dirty towels, into a towel shed where you can get clean towels. As it is is where they put dirty towels but EVERY single time I went to the main pool, I had to ask for a clean towel and then wait ages to get one (or in one case never came and I will say a manager noticed and kindly sent over a drink at dinner which was really appreciated - but we had exact same problem the next day). It doesn’t seem to be set up for people to move positions during the day, so they put towels down first thing on all the loungers, but we would usually move there later in pm and would happily get my own towel if towel stand to collect from - but it just didn’t seem to particularly fall to anyone and would have to catch a member of waiting staff and was never easy. On the plus side never an issue with getting loungers - we were there when hotel was fully occupied and could always get sun lounger or cabana by the pool and the beach is so long will always get a parasol down there. Sun lounger wars definitely not an issue here which is great - the towel issue should be easy to fix in comparison. Housekeeping kept our room lovely and clean but I couldn’t help think it would help them out a bit if there was something by the steps to wash our feet off from sand coming in (Maldives they have the water urns by pools / villas for this). And matts at front and back doors. We walked past Lux Le Morne as well as the other hotels along the same stretch and definitely felt this was the best position and best facilities. Is definitely a hotel we’d return to, and hopefully see more of Mauritus next time as the resort was so good we didn’t do anywhere near as much outside of it as we thought we would! Read less

We went to the JW Marriott in Mauritius for our honeymoon. I'll be completely honest - I wasn't initially sold by the photos and videos, but my sister in law highly recommended so we decided to trust her and I am very very happy we did. The experience has been nothing short of excellent and every corner of the resort is beautiful. All the staff are incredibly friendly and it really has been such a phenomenal experience. In particular the restaurant 'Indya' as part of the resort was on a different level. The flavours and taste were unbelievable and the host - Kevin from the restaurant really went above and beyond to deliver such an incredible experience. Lastly I want to mention Ravi, from JW Marriott, he really looked after us and ensured if there was anything we wanted to would have it arranged - including helping me organise a surprise for my wife. To anyone who is considering the JW Marriott, and was in a similar position to us, all I can say is GO, you will have an incredible experience. Read less
