The hotel

If ever a hotel was deliciously OTT, this is it. Its 39 acres host enough pools to swim in a different one every day of the week (and still have one spare); 2 championship golf courses; and dining experiences including a Sunday Brunch that will satisfy your hunger for a week, and High Teas with dainty cakes and finger sandwiches. The setting’s pretty lavish too – near Phoenix Mountain Preserve and Biltmore Fashion Park Mall. A Frank Lloyd Wright design masterpiece, with a 1930s pool rumoured to have been Marilyn Monroe’s favourite, Arizona Biltmore’s past is so fascinating they even host history tours. That’s not to say it’s stuck in the past: modern musts here include complimentary WiFi, a fitness centre, a 92-foot waterslide, and five dining venues serving contemporary takes of classic dishes.

I recently stayed at the Arizona Biltmore in connection with a conference. While the grounds of the resort were beautiful, they were a bit too expansive for a conference. There was a long walk everywhere (e.g., conference space, hotel rooms, especially the villas) and you just got the sense you were missing fellow attendees because the space was so massive (e.g., two ships passing in the night). Housekeeping works hard, but their timing was inconsistent. They didn't turn up the first day because I left my room around noon and they skipped my room and said they would double-back in the afternoon, but they never did. Other days they would try to clean the room very early in the morning (when you were just getting out of bed). Room service trays languished in the hallways for collection. At first blush, this does not scream 'luxury'/high end property. The real highlight was the fitness center and the tennis program, led by tennis pro, Brendan Easterling. I take regular tennis lessons at my local club, and if I could in some way recruit him for my club, I would. I schedule a 60-minute lesson with Brendan, and even in that short amount of time, I felt like I 'upped' my game. Brendan asks really insightful questions at the start to assess not only your skill level, but what your goals are for the lesson. And during the lesson, he was friendly and focused when it came to providing expert feedback. To further support his guidance, and this is what I found endearing even, was that Brendan has a robust binder of photos of tennis pros and their various playing styles to underscore that there is no 'right way to play tennis'. Lastly, the fitness center is top notch and has any equipment that you would want to use while traveling. Read less

Our stay at the Arizona Biltmore was a great start of our trip. We had visited several 5star hotels before, but this hotel was a wonderful experience and a real resort . It starts with the huge, beautiful and impressive entrance hall, followed by the many pools (we even found one for our family alone!) and the wonderful gardens. If you stroll around the grounds you always have the wish to take pictures of all the architectural details, flowers, palm trees, cacti and humming-birds. They offer a hotel tour, which unfortunately we hadn't the time to do, but I'm sure it would have been very interesting. POSITIVE: Our room was huge and beautiful with an extremely good bed (maybe the best mattress I had ever in a hotel) and wonderful duvet and pillows. The windows were large, with french doors and very positive: screen against insects. It was nice, that there was a fridge and not a minibar. The TV was large with many free movies and a personal message when we entered the room. best thing: the pools are open all day and all night (except the slide pool)! This is a so wonderful experience in an area where it is hotter at night than it is on a German summerday. For me who has very sensitive skin it is a great possibility to enjoy the pool without a sunburn. At night there were films at the slide pool. covered parking space for complimentary self parking or valet very nice and helpful people at the reception NEGATIVE: the usage of the famous Catalina Pool wasn't allowed for all guests aircondition was very loud and blew directly towards the bed toilet paper could be thicker and softer food and drinks very expensive strange: we got slippers on request, but were told we had to pay for it if we should take them with us. When I mentioned that they would throw away our used slippers, I was told, they would wash the slippers and give them to new guest. I can't believe that, but that didn't affect our positive impression of the Arizona Biltmore. We would love to come back! Read less

The decor is nice, service average, resteraunts average, pool average, drinks average. The price though, is way above average. Nothing was above average and so the price paid did not make it worth it. Also, unless you are a hear for an event, there is not much to do. The city is vert quite with no great attractions, night life, or vibe. Read less

This property is a complete miss! I came here to get some R&R and I've got the complete OPPOSITE of that. Staying in one of the "cottages" to start. The walls are completely thin. I've been up at 6AM every f'in morning hearing slams, staff wheeling crap back and forth, gardeners outside my door watering gardens at 6AM!!!! The shower in the room only half works. Only the overhead works and the water pressure is the same as if I was camping in a portable shower. Ordered coffee to be delivered twice, never came. The first time through the app, confirmed, nobody came. The second via phone call, I received a knock at the door a hour later than ordered, from "house keeping" with some cups and sugar??? Wtf! The menu is the same everywhere throughout the property. The food is meh, at BEST. I ordered a simple Ceasar Salad. It came with almost zero dressing, no cheese whatsoever. It was essentially chopped romaine with tomatoes??? Tomatoes...it's a Ceasar Salad!! Then I tried the chicken sandwich. Basically a sheet of batter in a bun with a bit of coleslaw in it and a ton of fries. I can get better at Denny's. I was told my turndown service would be affected because they are at a high capacity. Comes to turn out that there are 2 large conventions booked in, which coincidentally I was not told about when booking. These conventions have been booked in here for quite sometime. I booked in here a week ago. So I not only should've been told and given an option to go somewhere else, but MY service levels should not affected because you haven't staffed accordingly, knowing well in advance what was coming. Completely unacceptable. I don't have the heart to share this with my wife as it will devastate her as we are here celebrating a special occasion. I've said nothing to her. She will read this now though. The only saving grace of this property is the staff at The Citrus Club. Incredible service and attention to their patrons. Unfortunately, this cannot save this poorly run property. Perhaps it's time for someone from the club to be promoted and implement some of that hospitality to the rest of the property. I'd be embarrassed to put this type of experience out to my customers on a daily basis! Read less

The remodel of this place turned a cool aging hotel into a real stunner. Everything shines with golden tones, cool architectural bricks, stained glass, cool art work and beautiful grounds. The pools are open 24-7 and give you a great variety of options from giant slides to an adults only area. My room was on the 4th floor in the Paradise wing with a view of the pool. The room was beautiful with nice amenities and comfortable furnishings. It had the overall feel of luxury in a modern way that fit into the overall resort. The bed had great sheets and pillows but was a little hard for me but some would love it. The bathroom has a large walk in shower and a separate toilet room. The shampoos and other amenities had a great scent. The towels were plush and plentiful. The only real downside to my room on the 4th floor is that it opened onto a balcony that is shared with all the rooms on that side of the building. This means that you don't have any real privacy and you can't sleep with your door opened. The rooms on the second floor have the same issue. The food I had here was all good but spendy. The drinks are creative and also spendy. The new Spite bar is a great outdoor meeting place with lots of seating and fire pits. The staff were all friendly and helpful, and unlike some places the whole place was very well staffed. I would stay here again, particularly if I could find a good rate. Read less
