The hotel

Built in 1957, Mammoth Mountain Inn was Mammoth's first ski-resort accommodation and the only slope-side hotel at Mammoth's Main Lodge. Today it offers activities year round — in summer there's hiking, biking and outdoor adventures, and in winter it's a core skiers' and snowboarders' paradise, with the ultimate entry point to the slopes. Ski to the hotel at the end of the day and you can soon be blowing the steam off your hot toddy. Take a dip in the outdoor pool or one of the indoor or outdoor hot tubs. The Yodler dining terrace is the ideal place for a light snack on a sunny day and the great après-ski atmosphere in the Dry Creek Lounge is further enhanced by regular live music.

We had a fantastic stay at Mammoth Mountain Inn. The location was perfect for taking the gondola up the mountain and only a short drive into town. The service was lovely, a special mention to Tatihana who very kindly moved us to a bigger, airier room after I told her my husband was poorly. We’ll definitely be visiting again soon!

Had a great stay at Mammoth Mountain Inn, old hotel with lots of charm and a perfect location if you want to be next to the mountain. Hotel staff was phenomenal, went above and beyond to make the visit comfortable and memorable. Natalie, Tati, and Cyd were superb. Their kindness and hospitality made the trip for me. Will definitely be back.
Image of the Tripadvisor rating The Mammoth Mountain Inn Chalet (unit 700) should not be confused w/ the separate but nearby Mammoth Mountain Chalets.

Would give the Chalet at The Mammouth Mountain Inn (MMI) main base area a 5 out of 5 for location and MMI staff support and the exceptional spring skiing & boarding at site. However the accommodations are a bit dated and our unit had several maintenance issues which resulted in only an overall medium 3 rating. That said, given the early mountain opening and shorted ski day during the spring season (plus the gondola from downtown closed) there is a lot of upside to staying on the mountain, rather than driving up from town, and therefore being able to hit the slopes early each day with the spring sunshine. Proximity to the lifts also provides flexibility for a group or family that may have folks wishing to come and go between skiing & the unit on differing schedules with-out hassle. It’s important to note that the MMI Chalet is one of a few standalone units managed by the MMI, next to but not in the main hotel. Our stand-alone A-frame was called “The Chalet” or unit 700 which worked out great given its proximity to the MMI main hotel and all its amenities like ski & boot storage and a get-ready-area plus the Discovery lift just across the road for easy access to a handful of runs, a small terrain park plus the main base area facilities, gondola and longer lifts. Noteworthy is that very close to MMI Chalet, our A frame 3 bedroom unit managed by the MMI in this review, there is a completely separate set of A frames managed by an outfit called Mammoth Mountain Chalets, which can lead to confusion if not familiar with the area when booking a place to stay. If booking specifically the MMI Chalet, where we stayed, it may be easiest to just call the MMI or the MM General booking/info folks to work out details and be sure which property you are actually booking. Our unit had a very well stocked kitchen with a range and microwave, a washer & dryer, two queen bedrooms and 1 bathroom downstairs plus a king bedroom upstairs with its own bathroom. The unit has 2 reserved parking spaces plus it is just a few steps from the outdoor pool and hot-tub associated with a nearby wing of the MMI main hotel. Read less

Everything was generally good about my stay, the room was big and comfortable, heat was adequate, staying slope-side is a great feature. However, the restaurant experience was not up to par. It was a Monday night, I ordered a drink, and 15 min later received it, then my food 10 min after that....there were maybe 15 customers in the restaurant across 4 tables and the bar. The bartender seemed way more concerned with chatting up customers and running drinks to tables (that's why waiters are a thing), and eventually got around to making my margarita...to the extent that I thought my order was lost in the system. The waiter mostly stood around, seemed pretty lazy about his job. The food was overpriced for what I got. Tomato basil soup was akin to Ragu tomato sauce, the brioche bun on my burger was very stale, and the fries were those food-service/frozen ones, which didn't fall in line with the purported quality of the menu. I observed that one table had to walk to the bar to get the waiter to take their order, after having close menus for about 10 min. Not cool. The little gift shop with snacks was quite overpriced, but I guess I can understand the 'convenience charge'. Thereafter I drove to town to eat. Read less
Image of the Tripadvisor rating Threw out bag of dirty laundry

Apr 24, 2024 Mike J

Convenience to the lifts is an understatement. Room was very comfortable, and remodeled. My only complaints is that my dirty laundry was taken and presumably thrown out. The clothes bag was not near the trash can. No big deal, but the Asst. Mgr. said the housekeeper did not throw it out and I must have lost it in the car. Very disappointed… Read more

The clothes bag was not near the trash can. No big deal, but the Asst. Mgr. said the housekeeper did not throw it out and I must have lost it in the car. Very disappointed that they put the blame on me and would not reimburse for the cost which was only around $120 to buy what I lost. I think it was an accident and not deliberate, but still putting the blame on me? Read less
