The hotel

Transport yourself back in time and stay at the elegant Westgate Hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter. Brimming with decadent furniture, the rooms here are some of the largest in the city, and designed to meet the high standards of European hospitality - so you'll certainly feel at home! If you're visiting between Thursday and Sunday, afternoon high tea in the Grand Lobby is a must. And on these evenings there's a host of live music to be enjoyed in the evenings too, be it out on the Veranda on balmy evenings, or in the Plaza Bar (where you can enjoy it with some delicious light bites and cocktails). The hotel is close to the famous Balboa Park, you can even see it from some of the rooms, and the area has plenty of restaurants, bars and boutiques. Back at the hotel, leave time to enjoy a bit of relaxation at the rooftop pool or in the sauna - the AquaVie fitness and wellness centre spans 4 levels offering a range of classes and treatments to have you feeling rejuvenated.

The location was convenient for the convention center and the historic district with plenty of busy places to eat. Nice walk to the seaport area. Hotel facilities are good although by day 7 the breakfast options were getting a little tired but the service from Gabriel and Tran was brilliant! The pool area is nice for relaxing in the sun and the pool opening hours are generous for November. Tea parties in the theme of Wicked looked fun and had a string quartet playing modern music in a classical style (think Bridgerton) in the lobby. Slight downside was the internet which was unsecured although they sold the lack of password requirement as a positive! Meant we had to hotspot internet from our phones. Read less

Good place to stay. Nice pool bar and a friendly and chatty bartender. Beautiful atmosphere with a fire for warmth. Our room was spacious and clean, with a nice view of San Diego and a bay. The Westgate is a lovely classic hotel but not stuffy. It is in a very central location in downtown, about a block off of the Gaslamp District (between 4th and 5th) and either about 6 blocks north to the piers or about 12 blocks west to the marina area near the Convention Center. It is in the downtown business / government building area itself and that is dead. Several retail storefronts are closed down; the only people traffic you see are people with lanyards for conventions, and the only vehicular traffic you see are cabs and the trolley. An example of the work from home rut. It is very quiet but within easy walking distance of everything. Keep in mind that retail prices for food etc are very high. There is a CVS a block north but the prices are crazy high, it is dirty, security is tight, and homeless people loiter. But I discovered a Ralph's (Kroger owned) just a few blocks away (a half block north and then on First about 4 blocks west) where the prices are normal. Gaslamp restaurants are, for the most part, overpriced and overspiced. The Westgate's decor is A+ -- cream, gold, and sapphire blue. Rooms are large and very clean; bathrooms are brightly lit with marble, large soft towels, good lighting and counter space, lots of space, and excellent shower water pressure. There are two closets in each suite with real hangers, two mini fridges empty for your own things, and very nice bathrobes and slippers (something common in the EU but not in the US). Beds are very comfortable and linens are high quality. Breakfast is stupidly expensive - more so than five star hotels we have stayed in on La Croissette in Cannes, France. It is also in a plain room without any windows. There are several restaurants nearby with options. Staff are friendly. Attached gym is excellent. And 2 luggage racks! Read less

Loved it! The room was large and so was the bathroom! The staff was friendly and helpful. Loved that we were able to Chromecast to the tv in our room. Would definitely stay at The Westgate again. The gym was amazing. We did not use the spa services so we are unable to comment.

Fantastic housing, incredible customer service - David and other front of house staff ensured my every need was met and provided excellent service. Next time I’m in San Diego, I’ll be sure to check availabilities at the Westgate - quality of service I can rely on
