The Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa

Big Island, Hawaii

Virgin rating

The hotel

Spanning 22-acres of oceanfront, adjacent to Keauhou Bay, this truly special resort offers a perfect location for an authentic Hawaiian experience. Most of the resort overlooks the ocean and feature beautiful colours and prints created by renowned Hawaii designer, Sig Zane. Another highlight is the fantasy pool, set on several different levels and dramatically nestled along the ocean’s lava cliffs — it really is unequalled in all of Hawaii, something we don’t say lightly! Kids will love the 200-foot winding waterslide at the oceanfront lagoon pool.

Tessa and Charlene gave us top notch service in the voyager club. Highly recommend it. The food was good quality and the drinks for happy hour were delicious. Thank you for the great cocktails and smiling faces. You guys are the best and we loved the service.

Will snorkel with them next trip. The resort itself is a mixed bag but i would stay there again. The good: the people. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Hoota, the yoga instructor, deserves a special mention. Great aqua yoga class! The people at the front door and reception were all wonderful. I did not like my assigned room because the balcony was right by the top of the water slide. (See picture). I asked to be moved. No argument at all but all they had available was a ground floor room. I avoid the ground floor for safety concerns so i rejected this. They told me the slide closes at 6 and does not open until (maybe) 9. I was there for only 1.5 days so i decided to stay put. Just the fact that they offered to move me, gives them bonus points in my book. And the slide hours were limited. BTW, This seems like it would be a good place for little kids. The weird: the resort and spa has no spa services. I heard the hotel has changed hands and it seems to be in a business re building phase. This is not the type of place i would normally stay. Big, concrete and cold cavernous feel (i had trouble finding my room, finding the water refill stations and finding reception). Space downstairs had a cafe with live music that echoed unpleasantly. I felt uncomfortable wandering around there because it was dark in the corners and there are all these empty shops. Reminded me of a bad neighborhood. Food options are limited. But they do have a shop open till 10 where i found snacks and other needed things. And lunch by the pool was great. I would stay there again. The location is better to the volcano and Kona than the kohalo area. Not sure about the beach nearby. Short stay so i stuck with the pool Read less

Club 47 is a phenomenal experience. Respectable food, including the food served in the on-site restaurants, and atmosphere. But the stars of Club 47 are the dedicated staff: Sharlaine, Emiel, Robyn, Fred and Tessa went above and beyond. Witty conversation and most importantly, honest recommendations for adventures all over the island, from coffee plantations to scenic vistas. I cannot recommend the small expense of including this option with your hotel stay. Read less

The hotel is severely under staffed. If you go to dinner, the restaurant is 80% empty but they can’t seat you because they have a single server. The bar staff seem to hate to work here and treat guests accordingly: they ignore you, no acknowledgement like “I’ll be right with you”, they avoid eye contact until they get to you eventually. The bar staff seem to hate to work here and treat guests accordingly: they ignore you, no acknowledgement like “I’ll be right with you”, they avoid eye contact until they get to you eventually. This happened every time we were at the bar. One time when they finally got to me so I could order the fish tacos, turns out they did not have fish tacos. How can the planning at this hotel that they don’t have fish in Hawaii! In any case the food is broadly bad. The cafe staff are friendly and attentive. Some of the best rooms are in front of the pool full of screaming children until 10PM every night. The room balconies seem to amplify the sound and the room windows have zero sound proofing. Also, our premium room has an AC system that sounds like an old broken fan and the toilet runs constantly. The location of this hotel is great, it could be such a nice hotel but it seems very poorly managed. It’s as if people without any hotel experience stumbled upon an abandoned hotel (this used to be a Sheraton) and are attempting to run it. Read less
Image of the Tripadvisor rating Outrigger Kona not for gluten free (celiac) people but beautiful property

This property is beautiful. Do yourself a favour and get an ocean front room on the manta side. It’s quiet and you see manta rays feeding at night. Kim at the pool side bar was great. NOT many gluten free options and staff not knowledgeable about it so get a car and eat off property
