The Beekman, A Thompson Hotel, by Hyatt

Financial District, New York

Virgin rating

The hotel

Built in the same decade as the Brooklyn Bridge, The Beekman had stiff competition when it came to architectural neighbours – but its glamour and grace granted it kudos with the building buffs of the 19th century – and today. This skyscraper’s kept its drama with its marble entrance, Persian rug-slung lobby, and Victorian balustrade-draped atrium, which stretches nine storeys skyward before being capped with a glass pyramid. It’s not just opulent in design though, with its ‘nothing’s-too-much-trouble’ service and dining scene mirroring its old-world splendour and new-world luxury. Two of Manhattan’s finest names are behind The Beekman’s restaurants: Tom Colicchio reinterprets old and new classics at Temple Court, while Keith McNally recreates French brasserie elegance at Augustine. Or you could join the socialites (and sometimes celebs) at The Alley Cat for cocktails and Japanese Izakaya comfort food.

Pleasant stay - have been coming here for years for the restaurant. Will go back but not order in-room dining, the restaurant is a better value for money than in-room dining breakfast. We got the special cuff links to remind us of our stay.

Stayed here for a weekend and it was perfect. The lobby and bar / restaurant are simply stunning. Rooms are clean and large enough. Front desk was attentive and the doormen / valet gents were incredibly helpful. A really nice experience.

Very loud during the night and early morning hours. There is almost no sound proofing at this place. You can hear the subway train running. You can hear people running across the hallway. It feels like you are sleeping in a train station. I did not get restful sleep while at this expensive hotel.

Pros: -Was generously allowed to check in quite early -Had brunch at Le Gratin, dinner at Temple court, and a few drinks at the bar and enjoyed them all -The atrium, elevators, and public spaces are really unique -Loved the classic, functional bathroom -Housekeeping and turndown service was consistent and friendly Cons: -No in-room Nespresso or coffee at this price point is inexcusable -Eye-wateringly expensive but quite average room service breakfast. Beware of price typos on the printed menu in the room -While I liked the vibe and ambience, overall the hotel is extremely dark, almost depressingly so -No offer of a room upgrade or acknowledgement of the milestone birthday I was celebrating even though I was told there were many rooms available and ready at check-in -I'm unsure if there are rooms that aren't adjacent to the atrium, but it does get quite loud. I also experienced quite a bit of noise from neighboring rooms -The room furnishings are a bit shabbier than I would have expected. A beautiful armoire whose doors simply would not shut properly, and extremely temperamental lighting (there were master dimmers in the main room and bathrooms, but they were impossible to set correctly without constant flickering; many jokes about ghosts were made). Several mismatched lamps with manual switches in awkward places suggested a tired, second-hand vibe I don't think fits the hotel -Steep amenity fee wasn't mentioned or explained at check-in; value there is all but nonexistent. Someone really needs to regulate these junk fees I think I was expecting a more traditional/luxurious 5-star hotel experience, and this stay missed the mark for me. Read less

Hotel is top notch. Service and cleanliness were both A+. Food at both restaurants (Temple and Gratin) was superb.
