The Beekman, A Thompson Hotel, by Hyatt

Financial District, New York

Virgin rating

The hotel

Built in the same decade as the Brooklyn Bridge, The Beekman had stiff competition when it came to architectural neighbours – but its glamour and grace granted it kudos with the building buffs of the 19th century – and today. This skyscraper’s kept its drama with its marble entrance, Persian rug-slung lobby, and Victorian balustrade-draped atrium, which stretches nine storeys skyward before being capped with a glass pyramid. It’s not just opulent in design though, with its ‘nothing’s-too-much-trouble’ service and dining scene mirroring its old-world splendour and new-world luxury. Two of Manhattan’s finest names are behind The Beekman’s restaurants: Tom Colicchio reinterprets old and new classics at Temple Court, while Keith McNally recreates French brasserie elegance at Augustine. Or you could join the socialites (and sometimes celebs) at The Alley Cat for cocktails and Japanese Izakaya comfort food.

Our room was perfect, a lot more spacious than I was expecting, and high up so we avoided the noise from the bar. Slept great and had brilliant food and drinks in the bar area. Dinner at Le Gratin was superb too, would highly recommend. The staff were great, they were super helpful with the queries we had and arranged some coffee for me really early on marathon morning before service had started. It's not the cheapest place but nor should it be, you get what you pay for IMO. Would love to go back some day! Read less

We celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary with a staycation that included the Jazz Brunch and dinner at Le Gratin. All of the food and drinks were delicious, and the staff went above and beyond for us with a bottle of Prosecco in our room and a slice of chocolate cake with "Happy Anniversary" at dinner! When our room wasn't ready on time, they treated us to cocktails in the Bar Room. Overall, the service in the Bar Room was a bit spotty, but the service at Le Gratin was fantastic. We love the Beekman and will definitely return! Read less

We started our experience checking into our room with a pile of room service trays blocking the entrance to our room… which normally I would not complain about but.. They gave us a lower tier room than we paid for but claim it’s the same room they sold us (not only smaller but does not anything like the room, notably there is no couch, 1 vs 2… Read more

They gave us a lower tier room than we paid for but claim it’s the same room they sold us (not only smaller but does not anything like the room, notably there is no couch, 1 vs 2 windows and is at least 30% smaller than advertised. ) This is not an inexpensive place and Its frustrating that the hotel staff does not care If you enjoy people making you feel stupid about an obvious downgrade then you should make a reservation here. Beautiful space! Feels 'special' yet not stuffy. Definitely feels like a party outside of the room (which it is! and it's fun!), but easy to drift away regardless on the smushy pillows and comfy bed. Plus would rather listen to a party in a gorgeous atrium than the city sounds on the other side. The Bar Room makes a great drink and the food is… Read more

This hotel is beautiful and located brilliantly. However, the service wasn’t good at all. It felt really impersonal and lacked the detail you’d expect from a top hotel. We had a noise issue on one of the evenings and had to move rooms. We were promised that the manager was intending on speaking to us but that never happened. It wasn’t even… Read more
