Kimpton Hotel Vintage Seattle

Seattle, USA

Virgin rating

The hotel

It’s not called ‘Vintage’ for nothing — this is the Grand Cru of Seattle hotels, with interiors, wine lists, and social get togethers, all under the influence of Washington State’s wine country. It may be in downtown Seattle, but step into this boutique retreat and you may feel like you’re in a tasting room, surrounded by earthy shades blended with grape greens and burgundy. It’s the perfect place to sample the region’s fine tipples, with a complimentary wine hour every evening. Why not move on to the award-winning Tulio Ristorante, where you can tuck into Italian classics that come with a fresh Northwest twist — and a wine cellar of course.

Let me start by saying I like this hotel brand. Kimpton has some terrific properties and definitely don't look like any of their competition. This is a good thing in my opinion. The Kimpton Vintage in Seattle is wine themed, the rooms all named for different vineyards and such, deep purple wall paper in the hallways, the drapery in the room with a vine design all clever and fun. This property has a downtown location in the city and the Market is about a 15 minute walk. Comfortable bed etc. We had a room on a lower floor which was a bit noisy but ok. Smallish bathroom, but again, ok. It was the 'optional' housekeeping that I found irksome and not in line with what a brand like Kimpton should be doing. I think that, at what you pay per night at a property/brand like Kimpton you should get your room cleaned/tidied, baskets emptied, bed made, soiled towels removed etc. included. We requested towels twice in a four night stay and they were delivered promptly, while we were out. The soiled towels on the bathroom floor remained. Waste baskets remained unemptied....you see where this is going? Doing those two small chores would have been a nice touch and would indicate that management or at least housekeeping is on their game. Disappointing, but not a deal breaker. The restaurant at this property, TULIO is quite good for dinner. Food and service is top notch and the room itself is warm, welcoming and lovely. Breakfast feels like a grudge match. They don't open until 9am for breakfast on Saturday, which is a mistake. Folks want to get out and going. They had one fella cooking (open kitchen), no bus staff, two waitresses who looked like they wanted to be a thousand miles away working the tables. They tried, but without any support they were defeated from the start. They sat people at tables, took orders, bussed tables, poured water/coffee/tea, made espresso/Capaccino etc, delivered food, cashed people out and that all takes time. I felt badly for them and wondered why their employer let them down. They were trying hard, but it just looked like punishment. The actual breakfast was good, well made and presented. In a city that literally re-invented coffee you'd think this would be a priority. I so desperately wanted a second cup, but did not have the heart to bother one of the women working against Herculean odds. I helped myself on the way out to a cup of 'amenity' coffee. This property charges a $25 a day 'amenity' fee, but they do offer complimentary coffee in the lobby in the morning and complementary wine and one small anemic snack tray from 5-6pm, as an 'amenity'. If I am forced to pay for it regardless, it is hardly an amenity. An amenity is a useful feature, like in the winter the hotel offers heat and in the summer provides air conditioning. There is a very small weight/exercise room, in their opinion that qualifies as an 'amenity' as well. I used the workout room once and one evening we had a glass of wine and my wife had one wee hors d'oeuvres, which I guess, according to them, is an amenity. I think that they should include these 'amenities' in the room rate, they're hardly worth the extra money or they should take note if you do have the wine offered and put it on the bill. Apparently, you pay for the 'amenities' whether you want them or not. Come on Kimpton, you're better than that. If you want to charge a 'use fee', then chage us if we use the wee room or let it be known that you make the wine available, but that there is a small surcharge. Don't pretend to 'give' and then charge for it. We're all grown ups and can, if we're staying with you, can handle the freight. We checked out very early, needing to make a 7am flight out of Sea-Tac, which is about a 25-30 minute ride from downtown, although our maniac cab driver did it in about 18 minutes, but that is another story. I had asked at the desk about car services or airport limo, the young lady assured me a cab would work out well and they could order it in the a.m. I don't care for uber or lyft. Next time I will not make that mistake. I am not my best at 5am, but that is the young man on the front desk's job. He could apparently not print out my bill and said I would receive one via email. I should have pressed him, but really had to get going. It really is customary when checking out to be presented with the bill. Turn the damn computer around so I can at least see it and approve it. Actually, it is customary anywhere you purchase something you get to at least see the reckoning. I may be old school, but I am not an idiot. All he had to do was the very least, which apparently is beyond his skill set. Now, not seeing it in my email and yes, checked junk/spam, I have to track it down with Kimpton. I am not a nitpicker and can let the petty stuff roll off, so I hope if anyone has gotten this far it will not deter. This is a lovely and interesting hotel, they just have to step up their hospitality game and fill some holes. Read less

Comfortable bed, clean room, quick service. The hotel is close to everything and also has a bonus free wine happy hour from 5-6. The gym is small but gets the job done. Quick walk to pikes, the waterfront, and more. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay at the Kimpton again.
