The hotel

Rubbing shoulders with the political bigwigs of Washington DC, The Mayflower is just a few blocks from the city’s most famous address, the White House. It’s a landmark in its own right though, welcoming guests for more than 90 years and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, its supersized and super-opulent marble lobby would befit any visiting statesman. Its dining venue would suit dignitaries too – EDGAR Bar & Kitchen is all edgy masculine styling, high-end drinks and cocktails, and American brasserie favourites with an upscale twist. Luckily, its fitness centre is open 24/7 to work off all the treats and tipples – although, you’re better off getting out and exploring all the landmarks, museums, and galleries within a stroll of your doorstep, from Smithsonian museums to world-class shopping magnets, or hopping on the subway just around the corner.

A very beautiful hotel with a magnificent lobby. We were lucky to be upgraded thanks to our loyalty program. The suite was large and clean. The room and bed were comfortable. However, although the hotel is lovely, the rooms could use some updating. The air conditioning, likely due to its age, was incredibly noisy, making it impossible to sleep with it on, so we were very hot. The breakfast is decent but not worth the price, with items like bland, soft croissants and orange juice from concentrate. The staff is very friendly, especially Morgane at the reception, who was particularly attentive. Read less

The Mayflower is dated and in need of an upgrade. Worst room service ever - bad food, plastic boxes with pre-made food. Towels are like sandpaper, no robes and the shower makes this very loud rumbling noise when you change from bath to shower and the noise does not go away. It seems like a nice hotel from the history you read about and the pics… Read more

Image of the Tripadvisor rating I found the worst hotel in the Marriott empire

This hotel is anything but luxury and has terrible service. It also has dishonest early checkout practices. The first problem was on check-in. They put me in a room that was already occupied. This hotel is anything but luxury and has terrible service. It also has dishonest early checkout practices. The first problem was on check-in. They put me in a room that was already occupied. I went up to the 4th floor room that I was assigned (supposedly an upgrade) and found a do not disturb sign on the door. When I went back down for a new room, the front desk said housekeeping probably left it there. What? Housekeeping ins’t supposed to go into a room with that sign on the door, so the room, if empty, probably hadn’t been cleaned. Or, if housekeeping was in there, they put the sign on the door and didn’t take it off. Either way, very poorly trained staff. The second problem was the room they finally assigned me. If it wasn’t the worst room in the hotel (#805) then this place is a dump. The air conditioner rattles constantly. It sounds like a jet engine. I couldn’t sleep at all the first night. I tried to book a room at 3:00 a.m. at the Meridien in Arlington or the Residence Inn nearby but wasn’t able to book one online for that night and nobody at those hotels answered the phone. So I was stuck there and couldn’t get to sleep until 5:00 a.m. The room furniture is run down and poorly arranged. There is no sitting area and no chair or couch. The desk chair sagged and was way too low (is everybody who uses this room 10 feet tall?). And there was no place to work. The “desk” was simply a part of the TV credenza, but the TV covered nearly all of the work area. The remaining area was covered by the coffee pot and its accoutrements. The final nail in this place’s coffin is its dishonest early checkout practices. I told the front desk on check-in on a Wednesday that I may check out a day early. They said no problem. When I checked out on Saturday, they said they were charging for my entire stay. The front desk staff played dumb. They kept saying you can check out early, as though I was saying I was in physical captivity and wanted out early. I know I can literally walk out of the hotel anytime. Their contrived “misunderstanding” was a way of dodging the fact that they were charging me for the entire stay despite saying it was no problem to check out a day early. Read less

My stay was from 6/6-6/11/2024. From day one my stay was sub par. The concierge did not return calls and seemed to always be on a break. My room was supposed to have a robe in it. When I requested one, I received one with a coffee stain on the sleeve. The room service was not as an elite hotel should be: brought on a tray and actual dishware. It… Read more

When I requested one, I received one with a coffee stain on the sleeve. The room service was not as an elite hotel should be: brought on a tray and actual dishware. It was brought as Uber Eats would bring it- in a paper bag and not hot! The room service food was also not delicious as an elite hotel should be. The wedding reception was also at the Mayflower and the reception food was definitely not what I would have expected- the presentation of the food was not pretty, it was cold, and the food was tasteless. Worst of all, when I was checking out, I was asked how my stay was to which I replied to Dejah at the front desk, "horrible from day 1." She asked me to share, so I did. She offered one night to be credited to my account which was something that she was not authorized to do. No one called nor emailed me to explain why I wasn't credited one day free- until I called a week later. I will return to DC, but never will I stay nor do I recommend the Mayflower. Too bad it's a Marriott, because I normally love my Marriott Hotel experiences. Mayflower should not be a Marriott. Read less

Despite being a historic hotel and a little outdated, it is actually well maintained and has plenty of current amenities - much different than prior experiences I've had elsewhere.
