The hotel

Those torn between ‘contemporary chic’ and ‘utterly authentic’ needn’t choose – after a radical revamp, Tropical Attitude promises both. All bold geometric design and luxe natural touches, this adults-only retreat gives grownups that boutique hotel feel and a genuine Mauritian experience. It starts with its location – facing a turquoise lagoon, just a free shuttle ride from the beautiful beaches at Ile aux Cerfs, it’s near the traditional fishing village of Trou d’Eau Douce. And it continues with its attitude – with real Mauritius found everywhere from its spa treatments to its experiences, including cookery lessons, a weekly ‘Made in Mauritius’ market, and home-cooked dinners at local families’ homes. Dining at Tropical Attitude is equally authentic, whether you’re at its intimate Kot Nou restaurant (which seats just 20 guests), tucking into Mauritian street food from TABA-j, or taking one of its picnic baskets over to Ile aux Cerfs. Book into one of the newer villas to enjoy a private pool all to yourselves, perfect for a special occasion.

We stayed at this hotel in July and could not fault it at all. All the staff are so friendly and could not do enough for you, the food is excellent, pool area kept spotless. We had a villa and our cleaner was lovely, we had different things made out of towels every day, the only downside to the villa was that the pool we had was cold and maybe during winter months it could be heated so it can be enjoyed. The free boat trip to the island is really good and we booked the 5 island boat trip with Virgin. This hotel is fantastic and we will 100% be returning, we felt this should also be classed higher than the grade it has been given as well. Read less

This hotel was awful. Where do I start? - The original room we were put in smelled like it needed a good airing, we could not get rid of this smell. This hotel was awful. Where do I start? - The original room we were put in smelled like it needed a good airing, we could not get rid of this smell. The room needed a lick of paint too as it was scruffy. We asked to be moved and it took 3 attempts until we were finally moved after we had been there 2 days. - The food was below average with mashed potatoes and pizza on the menu most days. The food was bland and most of the restaurant staff were disinterested and a small minority were ignorant. I asked on 3 occasions for butter whilst at the food counter, 2 of the staff wandered off and didn’t return so I waited 5 minutes for it and by that time my toast and my breakfast was cold. My wife was ill and we narrowed it down to the food one night. - Staff review: Ricky, who was one of the chefs, was very accommodating and would do is utmost with the food he had to please you. He made us a couple of lovely dishes. Unfortunately, Ricky was only there on a couple of occasions. Karuna, Christof and Remash were waitresses/waiters in the restaurant and these 3 were pleasant and attentive to our needs. Vikash, the chef that was present most of the time, was very pushy and kept asking us to give him a good review. He was a bit of a nuisance to be honest and also had an aroma of stale cigarettes. One of the other restaurant staff serving food, brought a serving utensil out of his pocket and did not think anything of it when my wife pointed it out to him. - The restaurant was not really what I would call a restaurant, there were 1 or 2 dogs in there at times which barked loudly at times when people walked past the outside of the hotel. The dogs were left to bark and wander around and push their noses upto some peoples tables, with staff just accepting this as the norm. - Hotel overall was not up to standard, the pool did not look clean, the bar was sticky when you leant your elbow on it, cockroaches were rife and we even saw a mouse in the bar area twice. Karen, one of the hotel managers was very helpful and apologetic about most things and most of the staff were polite and helpful. The local taxi driver (Vicki) was very helpful. This hotel is not on the beach, there is not a beach as it was washed away a few years ago. You have to walk 20 mins to a beach or get a taxi to other beaches. Read less

The friendliest hotel ever. Fab restaurants, bar and reception team. Rooms simple but we felt soo looked after! Just completed a cooking class with Vikesh - so knowledgeable and patient and we created the perfect Mauritian curry. What a wonderful place!
