Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa

Honolulu, Oahu

Virgin rating

The hotel

Take in the rich heritage and stately décor of ‘The First Lady of Waikiki’. Something of a legendary resort, it cleverly combines turn-of the-century Victorian elegance with modern luxuries. Relax by the pool area, under the shade of the historic banyan tree, or on the resorts private section of beach. Fancy a bit of pampering? Treat yourself to an amazing experience at the Moanalani Spa, the only oceanfront Spa in Waikiki, where the menu features relaxing treatments inspired by traditional Hawaiian healing techniques. Dining is a treat here — from the oceanfront setting of Beachhouse at the Moana to the delightful island tradition of afternoon tea at the Veranda at the Beachhouse. For a pre-dinner glass of wine or artisan beer, head to Vintage 1901 overlooking the banyan tree, or enjoy a tropical drink with live entertainment at The Beach Bar.

We booked rooms in the tower as that is what I read as being the best rooms. In my opinion they certainly weren't worth money we paid. The wallpapered walls all had marks on them, we had 3 rooms and you felt like they needed to be re-wallpapered, it looks quite dingy. I made sure we all had balcony rooms, but all the balcony doors were bolted and we didn't have access to any of the balconies. The prices of the food there were quite high in the hotel, but luckily the hotel is centrally situated amongst many places to eat and shop. The staff are lovely, friendly and helpful. I probably would not stay here again. Read less

Probably the best hotel we’ve stayed at here in Hawaii. We stayed for two nights here as this is quite pricey. I love the room, bigger than the first hotel we got. Very clean, spacious, and complete with the little necessities. Staff were friendly. Very nice beach front.

Very nice common areas and convenient location. However Tower rooms have all balconies closed off due to some safety/maintenance issues. Hallways and room on our floor had the smell of mildew. Bathrooms still use shower curtains. There is no power cord or plug near one side of bed for any electronics. A $42/day resort fee is mandatory and includes… Read more

A $42/day resort fee is mandatory and includes items that I would argue are rarely used by guests. A hotel at this price point should be doing much better. Read less

This hotel is an absolute gem located in the heart of Waikiki with direct access to the beach. The hotel staff was incredible from the bell desk, front desk to the concierge service. We stayed for a week in one of the oceanfront rooms in the Diamond tower and man the view was to die for (room 3616). Note: Diamond tower is the only tower that has access to balconies at the moment. All other towers have no balcony access due to a recent incident. Although the pool is not the largest, it is large enough to enjoy yourself. Getting a lounge chair by the pool is extremely challenging and you have to get there around 7:00 am to claim them or else they are all gone by 7:30 am. The waitress at the pool, Cayla, was especially exceptional. She went above and beyond to ensure my family was taken care of. She checked on us numerous times throughout the day and ensured the wifey and kids had all the drinks and food they wanted and remembered us by name. Incredible service! My only recommendation for the staff would be to not allow guest to put towels on the chairs at 7:00 and leave for the next 3-4 hours. It’s rude and not fair to guests who are at the pool and are looking for a place to sit. They should actively remove the towels and their belongings if someone is not there for over 1-2 hours. The beach is just gorgeous and the sand in front of the hotel is like butter with absolutely no rocks (beaches elsewhere can be a bit rocky at shore). Bell desk and the guys at the valet were amazing as well. They had a minivan taxi at the hotel at all times which was super convenient. Additionally, there is parking space right in front of the hotel for rideshare vehicles to pull-in. The restaurants on the property are amazing and have an incredible view but be ready to pay an arm and a leg. IT IS EXPENSIVE. Holy moly it’s pricey. There are many restaurants nearby that are amazing: Hulu Grill and Duke’s Waikiki are both beachfront restaurants and the food is amazing!!! My only complaint was that upon check-in, I mentioned that it’s my wife’s 40th birthday and I requested balloons and flowers sent to the room on her birthday. Although the request was entered, the cleaning staff forgot to deliver it. I had to follow up the next day which was very disappointing. They delivered it a day late. Overall, this is an incredible hotel in the heart of Waikiki. I’d highly recommend it if you don’t mind paying 3x for everything. I guess you get what you pay for. Read less
