The hotel

Built in the style of an historic sugar plantation, Sugar Beach is a world-class resort set in 30 acres of tropical gardens.  If you're not satisfied with just the facilities the hotel has to offer (although we know you will be!), this hotel also has preferred access to Ile aux Cerfs with it's tranquil beach, wide offering of water sports, additional dining options and an 18-hole golf course for the sports enthusiasts. The hotel itself creates a romantic setting with it's idyllic beaches and gourmet dining, but if you do have the kids in tow, the Sun Kids Club has daily itineraries to ensure they have their own adventure; giving you time to relax at the chic Buddha Beach Bar with a cocktail in hand.

Very nice resort with direct beach access which offers a lot of sport activities such as tennis, paddle, gym, water sports. Staff is very friendly and does all it needs to make your vacation an enjoyable experience. Beside the main restaurant, there are two restaurants which offer delicious Italian and Asian lunch and dinner menus.

The pool was FREEZING. The food was a bit hit and miss, they messed up the order. It was chaos. The room was very small as well, we had a room with two double beds and there was little room to move around them. There were also no water sports, unlike other hotels in the area; we had to go to another hotel and we didn't end up using it. The sushi/buddha restaurant could not be booked, even if it was a week in advance, so yet again, we were not able to maximise our use of the hotel. The actual hotel and decorations were very beautiful and picturesque, but that is the only thing that is going for it. Read less

This hotel was extremely deceptive. We reserved a room with a King bed and sea view. What we got were two full beds, not together. This hotel was extremely deceptive. We reserved a room with a King bed and sea view. What we got were two full beds, not together. The "sea view" meant facing towards the ocean, not that you can see it. We arrived late at night, and were told to talk to the reception in the morning about the issue. The next morning, we talked to a supervisor. He acted like we were the problem the whole time. The supervisor said there were no "king" sized beds available and said if one became available he'd change our room (not surprisingly, it never was changed). The supervisor said they could "push the beds together" (which would be uncomfortable by the way, as the beds have no mattress pads just a thin fitted sheet and there is a thick cord around the bed edges, and there would still be a gap). He said that the hotel sells "packages," implying that our "deluxe" package didn't cost enough to care about for him (but why would I want a more expensive "package" thinking we were getting a king bed and an ocean view?). He said he wasn't responsible for what a third party booking prints about their hotel when I showed our paperwork. But I looked the hotel up directly on line, and their advertising and photos were the same as my booking site. FYI, the way the hotel is laid out, most rooms are not close to the ocean. The issue with this hotel is the customer cannot be clear about what they are getting. Sugar Beach advertises themselves as a five star hotel, and they are not. I don't need a 5-star hotel, but I do expect honesty. That said, we got the half board, which means dinner is included. The food in the buffets was good, and the staff other than management are nice, and they have a piano player at night/music which was nice. You also have to pay for water at the restaurant though, which is real nickel-and-diming. Read less

In terms of resort quality, location and offering- excellent. What let it down was its patchy customer service. From when we arrived there were issues with a different price being asked to what we were quoted and took a bit to resolve. Service staff at Citronella and the Buddha Bar mostly unfriendly and didn’t have a good grip of what was on the menu. They were undertaking a fair bit of painting and aside from the fumes they were painting one of the public toilet areas without a sign on the door to advise people and so I had paint all over my clothes. When I asked reception for a plastic bag so I could try and wash them out and put them in a bag as we were leaving that day and no time to dry them I was told there was no one in the housekeeping area to assist and yet there were five staff at reception milling around doing nothing and you would think one of them could have grabbed me a bag. I also found it was difficult to book activities at the watersports centte because it was shared between two hotels. It’s a shame as the resort is really beautiful. Read less
