The Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa

Big Island, Hawaii

Virgin rating

The hotel

Spanning 22-acres of oceanfront, adjacent to Keauhou Bay, this truly special resort offers a perfect location for an authentic Hawaiian experience. Most of the resort overlooks the ocean and feature beautiful colours and prints created by renowned Hawaii designer, Sig Zane. Another highlight is the fantasy pool, set on several different levels and dramatically nestled along the ocean’s lava cliffs — it really is unequalled in all of Hawaii, something we don’t say lightly! Kids will love the 200-foot winding waterslide at the oceanfront lagoon pool.

Outrigger is a wonderful find with easy access to Kona airport and other excursion spots if necessary. Hotel has beautiful views, awesome amenities and friendly staff. Definitely would recommend this hotel to friends heading to the Big Island!

Game room looks finished but it was closed during our 7 night stay 3. Laundry machines need quarters and a couple of times when we went to get change they only had enough for one load to wash and dry. 4. 8 fitness center gym machines didn’t work. 6 of them have out of order signs but 2 others need them also. 5. Karen was so helpful and knowledgeable about the island and helped us plan many of our trips around on our own. Letty the housekeeper was the sweetest person. She provided us with the best daily service, taking care of our living quarters. Marie from Wailele was awesome greeting us every morning when we seen her. All the valet team were awesome getting to know them personally Read less

Positives: * Very friendly staff * Quiet hotel - while there were a lot of people, it never felt crowded * Very nice location - from view and surrounding gardens perspective * Nightly direct close-up view towards manta rays in the ocean * Fitness center * Separate adult pool * Good AC * Tennis and basketball courts Could be improved: * The area where you can look at manta rays was run down, and somewhat not in use (there was kitchen/bar area that wasnt utilized - would have loved to have drinks there and just have long evening chats outside) * Not enough food options * Restaurant that was there - the lunch and dinner food was good. But the price is super high - fancy restaurant high. Because of this a lot of people opted to look for food options elsewhere. Drinks were decent price. * Small shop that sold tourist stuff, snacks and food was way overpriced. Wines, alcohol and various food items were 2-3x more expensive than in other places or normal shops in Hawaii. * SPA area was not working at all, and it was not even shared anywhere. * Several equipment in the gym was out of order. * It was very visible that the hotel overall requires refreshment and fixing up, and the new owner (Outrigger) has started some of it. The resort is undergoing some construction but it did not impact us at all. The construction meant less people so not crowded for us at all! We upgraded and stayed club level. Entirely worth it - would do it again without hesitation. The Voyagers Club crew is so friendly and helpful. I wish is got everyone’s name - but the lady who worked on July… Read more
The resort is undergoing some construction but it did not impact us at all. The construction meant less people so not crowded for us at all! We upgraded and stayed club level. Entirely worth it - would do it again without hesitation. The Voyagers Club crew is so friendly and helpful. I wish is got everyone’s name - but the lady who worked on July 4th and Emiel on 7/5 - 5 stars each!! The front desk who helped advise my plan for the day was rather “ambitious “ and helped me scale back to more reasonable in the kindest way possible (so much appreciated- my original plan was too much) The pool staff - soo friendly. The valet staff - everyone was so happy to jump in a hot car and bring it over with ac blasting to help cool it off:) And don’t skip the activities. The young gentleman was so kind and respectful. And the woman was so kind. The activities range from hula lesson to stamping and more. So worth your 30 minutes if you are already staying here! Read less
