Hotel Zephyr

Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco

The hotel

After a multi million dollar renovation, the Zephyr has been transformed into a modern, quirky hotel with a nautical theme and laidback vibe. In the heart of Fisherman’s Wharf, you can walk to PIER 39 and Ghirardelli Square (did someone say chocolate?) or jump on a cable car to explore further. Hidden at the back of the hotel is Socialite, a casual restaurant with a sociable atmosphere. There are lots of dining options close by too — grab a clam chowder bread bowl or head to Chinatown for delicious dim sum. When you're done sightseeing for the day, your hotel room offers a welcome oasis from a city that seemingly never sleeps!

Went with our teenage kids and had a great time. The kids loved the games in hotel - none of which were video games! The s'mores were an unexpected bonus, and great for san francisco evenings. And you can't beat the location! Walking distance to so many things. The price was competitive, especially for city hotels these days.

My family and I had reserved four rooms in total last week. During the night of July 4th an employee named Jose from the front desk approached my cousin out of nowhere, yelling and demanding her room number. He accused her of vaping and threatened to expel her from the hotel, claiming it was the third time she had been warned. This accusation was entirely false, as no previous warnings had been given. Despite this, a fine of $250 was imposed on her. While I understand and respect your policies, it is unacceptable for your staff to behave so aggressively and unprofessionally. The charge was excessively high and unjust, especially since we didn’t even know that was prohibited and it was the first and only time they told her about this. I think the duty is to call her out kindly and if she repeats it he can fine her but that was not the case. After the incident, I approached Jose to ask for his name, explaining in Spanish that I did not appreciate the way he had spoken to my cousin. Although we were speaking in Spanish, he suddenly switched to English, saying he was an American citizen and would not use his Spanish-speaking ability to be “hurt.” This response was inappropriate and irrelevant to the situation. Since when does filing a complaint equate to hurting someone? Moreover, it seemed arrogant for him to switch languages, possibly expecting that I wouldn’t understand, and what does his American citizenship have to do with this matter? We chose your hotel expecting a restful stay, but instead, we were subjected to unwarranted hostility and unprofessional behavior. This experience has left us deeply disappointed. Read less

Worst female receptionist l ever experienced. We had a written confirmation of our 3 night stay but she insisted that we were a no show the day before. When her male colleague took over from her as she got not be bothered by us anymore we had to wait 30 minutes to accept 2 rooms which were available in the category our travel agent had pre booked for us. As a result both rooms were very average. We were given the impression to have to be thankful that they had any rooms left for us. No apologies from the hotel staff, no compensation which was very disappointing as it was our son’s graduation evening. Won’t stay in the hotel again . Read less

Do not stay here. It's Grimy and the hotel smells foul. Do not stay here. It's Grimy and the hotel smells foul. The front desk staff are not helpful, not kind and not really into doing their jobs so you'll have to stand and wait for them to stop chit chatting with each other and sometimes they come assist you and other times they look you dead in the eye and walk away. The rooms in the photos were clearly taken immediately after a reno which was likely 10 plus years ago. The actual rooms are similar in set up only not as advertised. The front desk staff, security guards and management are rude, entitled and lazy. The only good staff there are the bell hops. Check in is at 4 pm only when we got there at 4:25 our room wasn't ready?! Nope, we couldn't get one that was already prepared because I requested a hypoallergenic room. The woman at the front desk scolded me for doing so and made it sound like waiting was our punishment. WTF? We waited 2 hours for our room to be ready, no compensation not even a sorry, just attitude for being allergic to feathers. FYI... All of the seating in the lobby and outside is very low, so If you are plus size, tall, injured or a senior you'll never get out of the chairs. I finally checked in and was told that the hotel would charge my card an extra $75 usd per night deposit on the room, in case we damage anything! Why was this not mentioned on the website, on the confirmation, or anywhere! This is an unpleasant surprise to spring on anyone, much less this older couple who are asleep by 9 pm. The ironic part is that the rooms are crappy and most things are already broken in them before I ever got there. We even took before and after photos of the room in case they tried to blame us for something. After a long wait a lovely bellman, Anthony, took us to our room on the 4th floor. He is wonderful, helpful and kind. We tipped him very well. The elevator doors opened to the 4th floor and we were greeted by a stale smoke, 40 year old carpet, value village kinda stink. Anthony lead us on the long walk down the hallway that resembles the one in "The Shining" and then down another hallway to our room. The room is tiny. It's tiny tiny. Fortunately, the room didn't stink so we stayed. The bed is tolerable, the bath tub from the 50's and the decor was a mixture of yard sale and DIY craft. The designated workspace was small, but acceptable if only they provided a chair that was of the right height to reach the super tall desk. I mean they kinda did, sorta. The badly damaged stoolesque seat was tall, broken, but tall. It's too bad that the non adjustable seat and the desk were the same height. I don't know how anyone could make that work? The water pressure was good, but the super tiny tub that you stand in to shower was very narrow with curved edges, so you are never really standing on a flat surface so watch out! The first time we have housekeep clean our room, she left our door open. Like open open and for hours! luckily nothing was missing and the safe was still locked, would I still get my deposit back if someone had trashed our room because housekeeping left the door open? Anyway, My wife called the front desk and they said sorry. !!!!! I called the manager and she said sorry too! In the end the manager did compensate us a tiny bit. Tiny being the theme of this hotel. By the 2nd day the stank hotel odour began to emerge in our room. We never did invite housekeeping back in to clean, we just left the garbage in the hall and traded towels as needed. It is not a nice hotel all but it does charge nice hotel prices plus a nightly $30 resort fee plus a $75 a night deposit fee, which you won't know about until you're there. Not even being close to the wharf was worth the high price of this smelly hotel. Read less
