Phoenix Park Hotel

Washington DC, USA

Virgin rating

The hotel

Its stately setting on Capitol Hill is just the start of the ‘grandeur’ you can expect at Phoenix Park Hotel. A historic property that’s been treated to an $8 million makeover, this has all the sharp styling you’d expect from a hotel right at the heart of this modern metropolis, just a block from Union Station and a stroll from the top sights and shopping. The splendour starts the minute you step inside, with its elegant lobby dressed in mossy greens, uplifting blues, and the sparkle of its shimmering floor, chandeliers, and gold-daubed sweeping staircase. The dining here is more rousing than refined though – with its snug Irish pub, The Dubliner, outfitted with bottle-green walls and emerald leather bar stools, and bringing you all the classics, including fish and chips, Irish Beef Stew, Guinness, and even the odd Irish ‘jig’.

We stayed at this hotel in July of 2024. Not really much to say except that the staff were very nice, room was large and very clean and the location was walkable to most areas we were hoping to see. Most areas within a mile. We used valet, which was fast and easy. As for the attached restaurant, not so good. We were offered two free drink tickets on check-in, so we decided to have dinner there one night. Waiter was nice, but clearly new to the business so service wasn't great, but nice kid learning. He gets the pass. The drinks we ordered were good, but the gnats or fruit flies that came with them and swarmed our table for the next hour were really not great. Our food (chicken) was obviously well undercooked and we only took a few bites. We did not send it back. We were there early for dinner, and staff mainly hung out together with the manager by the bar, a few feet from our table, the entire time and never checked in with us to see how the food was, ask if we wanted another drink or anything at all really. Not sure if the restaurant and hotel are owned by the same company, but they are attached and we were provided free drinks at check-in. Hotel was great, we would never recommend the restaurant. Excellent location. 2 mins walk from Union Station for bus tour. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Reception girls were friendly and welcoming. We had dinner and breakfast in the Dubliner, both very good and good value for central DC. We would usually make a point of NOT eating in Irish Bars on holiday. For event planning, the Phoenix Park Hotel team is amazing to work with! Janice has always worked tirelessly to accommodate our needs and even last minute requests and changes. The space is clean, the team is responsive, and the hotel is in an excellent location.

Warm welcome. Room ready a bit early which was great in the heat. Good location for walking to all sites and very close to train station. Quite a few hairs on the floor of my bathroom and bedroom so I kept my shoes on the whole stay, also marks on the tables/bedside. No slippers provided but a robe was. Large room. Bed cover needs replacing. Not ideal being next to the lift and storage room for noise that started before 6am. Bathroom very small and fogs up with steam as the door has to be shut so you can actually get in the shower. No view. Air con / fan not very effective. Blasted for less than a minute then would stop for five or so. Seems no servicing of room on Sundays. Appreciated the coffee, water and tea on level 2 but if you want water in your room it is $5 for a small bottle. Dubliner underneath had a small menu and I wouldn’t recommend eating there. Walk a few blocks along Massachusetts NW for good options. Read less

I am sorry we are so late in sharing our utmost appreciation to you, Janice Washington for helping with our recent priestly ordination celebration. Such a memorable event! You were such a pleasure to work with- always accommodating and so prompt with all your responses. We will sing your praises as we share our memories with those having sons ordained Dominicans in the future. Phoenix Park Hotel is a great place to stay, wonderful accommodations, great reception facilities(a big shout out to Lesley Aldana- you were wonderful to work with!), and a lovely dine-in restaurant. I would be remiss if I did not mention your receptionists. All of our guests commented on how accommodating these ladies and you were in responding to any needs they might have had. Read less
