Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa

Montego Bay, Jamaica

Virgin rating

The hotel

Lying on a beautiful, long stretch of private beach, the Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa sits within 400 lush acres and is home to an 18th-century sugar plantation. A popular feature here is the iconic swimming pool but guests (kids' especially) also love the Sugar Mill Falls Waterpark, which is the largest in Jamaica. Why not grab a tube and float down the ‘lazy river’ or try one of the slides. There’s also a daily kids' club, leaving you with time to recharge in the full-service spa, or why not try out the Championship golf course. A variety of restaurant options with fine dining and sophisticated wine lists are on-site, with the newly renovated Rum Factory a particular hit, as is the Three Palms, overlooking the beautifully landscaped golf course.

This isn't our first visit to your resort and we had the best time ever! I only have one issue. I left the resort on Oct. 29th. When leaving I left a birthday card with the concierge, a lovely young lady, to be posted on the island as I didn't want the card to take months to arrive. That was my past experience. To date (November 11th) the card has not made it's way to Sandy Bay. I gave her enough for postage ($20) and I hope she had no trouble posting it. Is there a way to check this for me. I would greatly appreciate it! See you next year! Read less

Be aware- this is not the same place. We have been regulars for several years but this hotel along with Hyatt, Secrets and Grande Jewel have been purchased by the Playa Group- they are wanting to basically sell timeshares. But the food was horrible, they are serving cheap liquor -not Jamaican rum and serving Cuban beer as often ran out of Red Stripe- unacceptable for the price of hotel. To eat at Three Palms is now $40USD and was always just $15 USD. The room was always late being made up and done half hearted so we always had to call to get towels, toilet paper etc.The games room was in darkness so the days it rained there was nothing to do. The restaurants changed their menu and was inconsistent and not near the quality we had previous years. All in all it’s just very sad as was one of our favourite places and most likely will not be returning and will for sure not be going to other properties given that are on average $3800 plus per person and to be served cheap alcohol and terrible food is not worth being out that kind of money. This company playa collection is going to severely negatively impact Jamaica tourism at least for Canada as we want value for our money and when paying 5 star prices we expect 5 star quality. Hope that no one gets sucked in to the illusion they are selling as they say if you want premium liquor you get 15% discount with your subscription- ironically it used to be included prior to them purchasing the property. Also should mention numerous times the staff were arguing in the hallways and beach- the entertainment was non existent as well. So clear sign the staff are not happy which is night and day to like 8 months ago. Just really sad but please be aware and save your money by skipping playa collection hotels. Read less

And then we had to change rooms at 10 pm our second night because the ceiling was leaking and about to cave in. Second…food was mediocre at best. They didn’t have or ran out of many things both at restaurants and bars. Lunchtime restaurants often opened late. Seaside Italian for dinner was very good. Third…the teen zone is non existent. There are pool tables with no cues or balls, foosball table with no ball and although they advertise PlayStation , they were all out of order the whole time we were there. Most times, it was closed and the last day/night there was leaking in the ceiling there and the tables were drenched. Many activities during the day were either cancelled or changed times with no warning. It seems they have been bought by Playa and most employees were new and had no idea anything about the resort, activities, etc. The beach is small and was covered in seaweed….i know that’s not the resorts fault, however, there were NO attempts to clean it up at all. Our butler, Alphanso, was amazing throughout our stay!!!! And the lazy river was a highlight!! Also, there’s cats everywhere…including all over the outdoor restaurants. I would look at other resorts if heading to Jamaica. Read less

It was lovely to have some family time and get some autumnal sun but unfortunately we wouldn’t return to this hotel. The rooms are dated and unfortunately although the hotel has the pool with slides we didn’t feel it very family orientated. The food was VERY disappointing with very little selection for the children. One of our party has a dietary requirement meaning that they can only have sugar free drinks. This was very limiting as only Diet Coke on offer and that was if you could get any. We spent one morning asking at each bar and none of them claimed to have any! The timings on the entertainment varied and ran late but on the one occasion we went down for a specific activity it ran early and we missed it. Our daughter was very disappointed at this. The cricket club although it had pool tables and gaming equipment wasn’t well equipped. Pool cues and balls missing, no ball for the table football and no controls for the PlayStations. Overall I feel like the hotel would benefit from some investment and a refurb. To end on a positive note, the staff were all very pleasant, the males in our family enjoyed the golf course and the beds were comfortable to sleep on. Read less
