Hotel Del Coronado

San Diego, California

Virgin rating

The hotel

‘The Del’ as the Coronado is known as has been open for business since 1888 and is a designated National Historic Landmark! Indeed, it’s been the backdrop to many a Hollywood movie, including Some Like it Hot starring Marilyn Monroe. The last of California’s stately old seaside hotels, it is a monument to Victorian grandeur with virtually no two rooms alike and a sumptuous wood panelled lobby that has to be seen to be believed. Recent additions include Shore House at The Del, an elevated hotel experience in an extraordinary neighborhood of seaside villas. From an oceanfront pool that blends seamlessly into the horizon, to an inviting living room that flows effortlessly outdoors, Shore House offers an extraordinary sense of place, where family and friends form deep connections in a rare beachside setting. The Del's newest restaurant inside the beautifully restored Laundry building. Dine outside on the lawn and watch the action at the BBQ Pit or gather inside the historic brick building beneath vaulted ceilings and the Laundry's original conveyor system. Pull up a stool at the historic wooden bar from the 1880s for inventive cocktails, beer and wine.

Sorry there wasn’t a 6 rating ( “awful for the price”). I had reservations for 3 rooms in the Cabana section for a family reunion. Price for our two pool-view rooms was $700+ EACH per night, and our ocean front room was $1,300+ per night. We had booked for 3 nights. When we arrived at the hotel 20 minutes before our checkin time of 4 PM, which in my experience is quite late, the arrival area was a chaotic mess - jammed with cars and no place to park. After a couple passes around we double parked and unloaded ourselves.. A parking attendant arrived after about 10 minutes and took our car for the princely sum of $75/night. At the front desk we had another 15+ min wait in line, only to find our $1,300+/night room wasn’t ready and would not be until 5 PM. The desk clerk said she would give us a $100 credit, a rather meager concession for a $1,300+ room. We all hung out in one of the poolside rooms until the beach front room was ready at 5 PM! The rooms were all identical and pretty basic hotel fare - in our experience probably might go for around $400 at most nice resorts we have visited. The bath had just a single sink and walk-in shower. Nothing special. Safe didn’t work - maintenance came promptly to fix. Bedside nightstand light didn’t work - had been unplugged and wires were a messy tangle but got it figured out eventually. The $1,300 night room was very noisy as it was located below the sun deck with a live band. They stopped playing at 9 PM, but noise from adjacent room tv persisted. much later; Insulation quality of the room seemed poor. Dinner at Serea restaurant was ok, saved by great staff service. Food was ok but again nothing special and overpriced. My “half chicken”main course was overcooked and dry but family members who had the tuna liked it. Unclear to me if the reviews giving this restaurant rave ovations are legitimate? We live in nearby Del Mar and there are at least a 4-5 better quality sea-front restaurants in that tiny community. Overall our experience was disappointing and I feel badly for making such a poor choice for what was hoped to be a great family reunion. Buyer beware of this historic but now greatly diminished hotel. Read less

One of the worst hotels I’ve ever stayed in, I can’t believe I paid 800+ for this. If you asked me to pay $200 per night, I would’ve considered it…..without the $75 parking fee. One of the worst hotels I’ve ever stayed in, I can’t believe I paid 800+ for this. If you asked me to pay $200 per night, I would’ve considered it…..without the $75 parking fee. When you enter the hotel lobby, you’ll be greeted by an arrogant front desk, who thinks he is doing you a huge favor by upgrading your room from your Hilton Diamond perks. They don’t really respect you much, and don’t even mention services. The room was extremely disappointing also. Shower floor was dirty. Bed sheet has new bodily-fluid stain. There were even someone else’s clipped finger nails down on the table. The bottled water was already opened. They did change the room for us, yet it is a worse room (no upgrade) with two queens but not one king. The new room is a bit better, yet one of the bed sheet still has blood stains on the end. We just stayed at the one clean queen bed instead of staying in both beds. At the end, my room was charged an extra $106 spending from their restaurant Sun Deck, yet we had never dined in Sun Deck at all! They did remove the charge on us, but how in the world would that had happened? If I didn’t checked the receipt in depth, it would be really hard to argue. Please note that the hotel manager is likely to commend under this post that they understand the issues not up to their “standards” and they will send an email address for complaining. NO THEY DON’T CARE AND WONT CHANGE. They are simply milking the customers’ money especially from those conferences just because they are historical. The entire hotel is under construction and what you are getting is more of a “motel by the sea” type with a self parking fee of $55 and valet parking of $75. Completely not worthy. People mentioned that the sea is dirty filled with sewage, which made us to not even get close to the water. Sure it’s not the problem with the hotel, but it’s the view we are using our real money paying for, right? Overalls, not even worthy if you are paying $200. Some historical hotels always use their services to beat their older infrastructure. Unfortunately, Hotel Del Coronado is not one of them, but only the opposite. IT WILL RUINE YOUR VACATION OR BUSINESS TRIP. Read less
Image of the Tripadvisor rating Don’t waste your money on beach beds

Paid $200 for a set of beach beds for the day. Sand is really nice but that’s where the advantages end. The entire hotel is a building site with construction cranes and banging going on the whole time. You can’t even swim in the sea because of a toxic spill that washed up from Mexico. A total waste of time and money. Avoid.

Although a beautiful beach and historic resort, I am disappointed in the fact that on our third day staying at the Beach Village at the Del, I woke up to see a bulldozer removing sewage filled sand from the beach we paid THOUSANDS to enjoy with our three children. I am sad to say that although it is not the fault of the resort that sewage is being dumped in Tijuana (which makes it's way to the Del), the one tiny sign near the lifeguard stand was in NO WAY enough for unsuspecting tourists on the beach who may be unaware of this problem. Further, when I spoke with a beach staff member who arranged our beach chairs, he conveniently withheld the reason that the ocean was closed for swimming or entering. I would not recommend wasting your money at this resort, given the unpredictable nature of the sewage issue and inability to fully utilize the beach you are paying thousand to enjoy. We stayed 5 nights and could only swim in the ocean for half of that time. Very disappointed that this information hasn't been more fully communicated by the resort upon booking and arrival. We recently had a horrendous experience at the Del. My makeup bag containing over $1000 worth of cosmetics was stolen from my room. To my disbelief, the management did absolutely nothing to resolve the issue and instead allowed the thieving housekeeping staff to keep my belongings. This outrageous behavior is beyond unacceptable. This isn’t the first time something has gone missing. On a previous visit, our beach toys were stolen when we changed rooms mid-stay, and we decided to let it go. However, it’s now clear that theft is a pattern at this hotel, and management’s inaction suggests they condone it. The management and staff here are untrustworthy. They clearly don't care and only offer a lot of lip service without taking any real action. This outrageous behavior is beyond unacceptable. Read less
