InterContinental The Willard Washington D.C.

Washington DC, USA

Virgin rating

The hotel

Nicknamed ‘The Residence of Presidents’, the name-dropping guestbook at this historic hotel backs-up its status as a DC ‘des res’. Some of that kudos is down to its address – on Pennsylvania Avenue, this district’s other notable residences include The White House, just one block away. Inside, The Willard InterContinental spills secrets of its 200 year history in its high-drama décor, from the uber-grand lobby to the regal ‘Peacock Alley’ (the ideal spot for afternoon tea). It may be perfectly positioned for sightseeing and restaurant-hopping, but they’ve also added time-wasting treats like a sumptuous spa and tempting dining and drinking spaces like their French-inspired brasserie, Café du Parc.

A quick weekend getaway to our nation's Capital for some sightseeing and to try a couple of new restaurants turned into quite a pleasant experience thanks in part to The Willard. The highlight of this place was, without a doubt, the Afternoon Tea Service at the Peacock Alley. We were not planning for this and it became one of the highlights of our trip. Beautiful and delicious hors d'oeuvres, both sweet and savory, were served along exotic teas and a little bit of champagne on the side. Mostly locals were in attendance for Afternoon Tea and they were dressed to the occasion. Definitely need a reservation in advance. Either in town for pleasure or business The Willard is very well located. One block from The White House and walking distance to the National Mall and many important Government buildings (Office of the Mayor, Department of the Treasury, Department of Justice, FBI...). The one bad thing we encountered during our stay was that Cafe du Parc, where breakfast is served, has a very limited capacity so we were told we had to wait 30-40- minutes for a table. Who would have thought you need reservations for breakfast at a hotel!!?? The rest of their dining options are more than acceptable. Starting with the Round Robin Bar, who, according to them has been the meeting place for DC’s political and social elite since it was established in 1847. I wasn't around back then but nowadays i can tell there's an eclectic mix in the crowd... few local government young officials, couples, groups of friends and a group of tourists. The season bartenders will perfectly execute your cocktail of choice, i highly recommend their Mint Julep. Although the rooms (and the building in general) are a bit outdated and need some renovation, our room was very cozy (with a partial view of the Washington Monument) and the bed was super comfortable. The bathroom was large and spacious, offering high end toiletries. Overall, our stay at The Willard was very pleasant. Read less

We had a great time, especially at Cafe du Parc! Our server, Brenda, was fabulous! Very attentive, warm and kind from the start of our meal to the end. She made our 11 month old son feel right at home as well. The food was also delicious. Highlight recommend!

Spent a few days at this historic hotel and was so impressed. The rooms were well appointed and the service was top notch. Was worried that the rooms would feel stuffy but they were spacious and had modern touches. I look forward to returning on my next business trip!

Beautiful hotel, lovely staff and very large and comfortable rooms and beds. Room service was to die for. Very expensive, but a lovely place to stay. A perfect base to explore the city from. Clean, and well appointed. Staff were very very helpful. History of the place is very interesting... and claims to be the source for invention of the word lobbyist! It's not cheap, but worthwhile imo Restaurants and bars close around the area are very good
