Oleo Cancun Playa

Cancun, Mexico

Virgin rating

The hotel

Using minimalism to maximum effect, the sculptural ice-white architecture and matching monochrome interiors of Óleo Cancún Playa give it a calm chicness that’s a far cry from the buzz and colour of your setting — right at the start of the famously vibrant Cancún Hotel Zone. The dedication to ‘white’ is only really interrupted by flashes of blue — homage to the sea and surf just steps from the hotel. Overlooking the beach, the infinity pool adds a touch more turquoise, with the pool bar’s tropical-inspired cocktails adding their own shots of colour. The styling may be minimalist, but the features aren’t. You’ve got spa treatments, complimentary WiFi, an art workshop, and restaurant menus that take you from Japan to Mexico and Peru, with stops on the way for comfort food, international favourites, and bakery treats served up with Starbucks™ coffee.

My experience here could be well described as paradise on earth. Most of the employees are so professional especially Abad, Rodriguez and Manuel. Abad is never tired of providing anyone’s order or request. Our experience at the Spa was also beautiful. I invite to you all to come and experience this amazing paradise on earth.

We did the all-inclusive. The spacious ocean view room had comfy beds, and great house keeping staff. The food: The Almar buffet restaurant was good, and several times/week, dinner is ordered off a menu rather than a buffet which was nice. The Hakka (Asian) restaurant had really good food (except the sushi was missing the ginger, wasabi and soy sauce). The Azul restaurant was closed for renovations. The beach was closed for swimming because of the winds and ocean undertow. Apparently this is typical from Sept-Nov or Dec. That really bummed my travel buddy, so we went to Isla Mujeres one day and swam at Playa Norte. It’s a small hotel so it doesn’t have as many activities as some larger hotels. Excellent staff. Deserving a mention is Julia Ramirez in guest services, who was so kind and helpful. As well, Manuel Ham in the Almar buffet is a very attentive server. Read less

The positives are named Maurisio and Keven who were very helpful with choosing outside restaurants and at our departure. On the negative side, the were renovating a restaurant and the outside of one of the tower and the nose level was unpleasant.

Azul restaurant isnt open at all. Jacuzzi has been cold the entire stay! Drinks are watered down be lucky if they come to serve you by the pool. The elevators are tiny very slow if working at all i used the stairs a few times. They beg you in the hallways, call your room, knock on the door to ask if you want to do a timeshare presentation. Theres absolutely nothing to do here for fun. No beach access at all too much rip tides daily. Rooms have a horrible smell of mold and mildew. Only good thing is the view of the ocean. Read less

Firstly the positives, the staff! Kevin at the front desk is helpful, attentive and extremely hard working. Abad is an absolute gem of a human who runs around all day, everyday and always with a smile on his face. The bar tender Gerry is fantastic, keeping your drinks topped up and very attentive to all his customers. Alejandro must have a mention… Read more

Abad is an absolute gem of a human who runs around all day, everyday and always with a smile on his face. The bar tender Gerry is fantastic, keeping your drinks topped up and very attentive to all his customers. Alejandro must have a mention too for his efforts and hard work. The food is average at best, unfortunately the Mediterranean restaurant was closed during our stay which was a shame and should have been communicated. The ceviche from the lunch menu was very good, tuna tartare and salads good too. Otherwise it all gets a little repetitive. The beds are big, comfortable and rooms cleaned very well daily by the exceptional maids who work very hard. The hotel itself is a little tired but it was visible to see they are painting/decorating to improve those areas. A good stay but other than the staff, there’s nothing to write home about, for the money we paid it’s reasonable value for money. Read less
