We returned this afternoon from a private guided tour with Scott Berry of Lake Louise and the surrounding area. It was a truly awesome tour. Of course the views were stunning and the lakes and mountains magical. But the best part was Scott - an incredibly knowledgeable, experienced and engaging guide. We really loved the whole thing - thank you.

Some background: I was travelling to the hotel to participate in The Gathering. I was with 6 colleagues; all booked the same way through the conference. I invited my wife and son (2 years old) to accompany me as your hotel has a world-renowned reputation for experience and service. We had also booked afternoon tea for our last day as family time as I would be primarily occupied with The Gathering. The Stay: I'm going to keep it to what were the larger irritations. Prior to check-in, I could not add my wife and son to the reservation despite doing so through the Fairmont portal provided. While they were present on what I could see, it turned out that this was not the case at check-in. This was no doubt exacerbated by the fact our conference communications had encouraged us NOT to contact the hotel directly. At Check-in, I inquired whether my wife and son had been added to the reservation. They had not. I inquired if there was a room available that had either a king bed or 2 doubles(etc.) There was not. However, at least 3 of my colleagues who checked in after me were provided rooms with this sleep offering. 1 was provided a suite at no additional cost. So, I can only infer there WERE rooms available. We compromised with having a crib provided (thank you), but we had to ask 3 times for it. Once at check-in, again several hours later, and finally in the evening my wife called again and requested it, and it came. Regardless, our son no longer uses a crib at home, and this proved to be an unacceptable compromise from his perspective. Our first evening, we had the sink in our room backing up with wastewater. The gurgling occurred several times through the night, accompanied by the smell. The sleeping arrangements and the sink were enough for my wife and son to depart after 1 night of a planned 3 and for us to subsequently cancel our Afternoon Tea reservation. As we had travelled together this necessitated an unplanned 4 hour round trip for me. The sink issue persisted the second night. Friday, I went to the front desk at 12:30 and asked that maintenance take a look at my sink. When I returned to my room at 5, there was obviously residue still in the sink, so I called again to have maintenance look. I was informed by Royal Service that some hair had been removed from the drain but nothing else was showing. However, they would dispatch someone again. Maintenance came to the room while I was there this time, and again, nothing showed while he was in the room. This is where my experience went from apathetic to frustrated. I couldn't make the sink perform and I had no proof (I did not video the sink when it was gurgling) there was nothing anyone would do to address the issue. The maintenance persons attitude suggested I was lying and that he couldn't be bothered to look further without proof. Vexed and annoyed, I went back to the front desk to find a solution. It was only at this point your hotel showed what I expected from the start. I was moved to a different room - a room I make note that would have allowed my family to remain for the duration - credited a small portion of my stay and my bags were moved for me. My check-out experience similarly lived up to my expectations of your property. I recognize that I was not staying on the gold level or in a Suite. I am by no means a high-dollar guest of yours. But my experience from the start until I made repeated complaints felt like one of indifference. Thanks for the opportunity to vent. Read less
